Hi guys,

I recently acquired this brush pot. The carving was so delicate and I couldn't help it.

The base looks pretty old and I see signs of aging here and there. However, my knowledge in wooden items are very limited so I am wondering how to date this brush pot.

Also is there any way to take care of this wood (zitan I guess)? Especially around the cracks and discolored parts. Is it safe to apply oil on this kind of old wood?

Members including Peter often recommend this.

But be careful with stone or ivory inserts here that may be problematic.

@imperialfinegems Thank you, Mark! Will the wax be able to restore wood's color a bit?

Honestly, I'm not even fully sure whether the wood is zitan 🤣 the base does show some grain but the color looks rather gray-ish

Would it be safe to use soapy water to clean up the stones and the wood?

Yes from what I know that wood polish should bring out the grain.

But you need to apply it with care and not interfere with the stone inlaid section.

Yes soapy water only on the inlaid section with a cotton bud should be OK.

Not entirely sure if this is Zitan or other. Generally speaking most Zitan did not have inlaid stones.

You may want to try to ask Peter via the identification app.

@imperialfinegems Thank you for your great advices, Mark. I just contacted Peter for further identification. Fingers crossed 👍

I am less worried about the stone inlaid part as there are a few examples at Sotheby's and Christie's.

You may want to take clearer pictures of the inlaid section.

But the base certainly looks old but I am not an expert on these.

@imperialfinegems You already taught me so much. Close-up photos of the inlays attached below.

It may be interesting to note that the pot also has some inscriptions and seal marks. It's a pity that my Chinese knowledge is very limited.

The top circular mark appears to be 赏心 shangxin mark but I am not entirely sure about the dating (maybe 17-19th C?).

The bottom square mark I am having difficulty to read.

From my Samsung S23 translator which may or may not be accurate.

The grab like claw grain suggests Zitan wood. Is this vessel heavy or lightish?

I can't tell from the pictures but the inlaid works looks a mix of ivory, jade, agate and maybe other.

This looks like a great bitong and could possibly be pre 19th Century. And the fact that it's got calligraphy is a very much so added bonus.

After this has been oiled its going to look absolutely fantastic. The wood looks very dried and is consistent with no treatment for many years.

Peter knows a lot about Brush pots and I would be very interested in what he thinks.

@terrancekim324 As would I, the monkeys are super. Thanks for the examples, your piece has a more interesting decoration with the worked rocks and trees background.

@terrancekim324

Hi Jay,

Peter has stated several times in his videos to not use cotton or cloth to clean carved wood as the threads can snag and pull on the grains. Instead, use a paper towel.

The wax is great stuff and will make it glow. Looking forward to hearing what Peter has to say about it. Looks really interesting!

Regards,

Steve

Hi all, just a quick update. I was told by Peter that the brush pot certainly looks old and might be from the Kangxi period.

I cleaned it up carefully with Howard Feed-n-Wax, and I could almost hear the wood screaming with happiness 🙂 It was quite satisfying to see the brush pot recovering its original color with every wipe.

As promised, I have attached more photos. Cheers!
