Hello, Rusty
I have been looking at all my sites for images like these what puzzles me
is the swimsuit or totte there wearing it doesn't fit in time line. All the
children in the art work that I have look at are in time period clothing.
I will look some more this is one of the thing you have to look at when
judging age is does it fit the time period.

Some examples from a Chinese website. All jars are of Kangxi and Yongzheng periods.

Hi there,
Many thanks to everyone for the extra input and images - all very exciting and very much appreciated.
I've been having a look myself and tracked down a similar jar that we spotted in a Christie's catalogue some time ago here (hopefully) < https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/two-chinese-blue-and-white-jars-kangxi-5342398-details.aspx?from=searchresults&intObjectID=5342398&sid=29ed5031-4368-47fd-bb50-858942bbbdaf>
Does this mean that it may be an earlier example after all?
Due to combined efforts we now have so many boy jars pictures that I'm really at a loss. The one most similar to yours, Mr.Rusty, is the bottom one in Xin's link (Yongzheng?). Sorry if I have misjudged the age of your piece, I am still a learner and we still miss an expert's definitive opinion on this. A very interesting topic though, I wouldn't have thought they had copied the Kangxi jars so early.
Birgit
Hi,
Gosh, so many boy jars!
I am also only a novice, but I still feel there is something wrong. As I said, the shape could be good and the base (not sure for Yongzheng - did they use a double circle?) but it is the decoration that bothers me. I still feel the feet are too prominent, the children too chunky and stiff, I don't think the faces are quite right but now, thanks to the new pictures, I feel they fill the space very badly.
All the other jars seem to show a good balance but in this jar they are squashed in. To use Shinigami's point, it doesn't look elegant.
I really hope it is an old example, how exciting that would be! And I would have learnt something, too. This is a very informative discussion. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Julia
Hi Julia,
I know exactly what you mean. The design doesn't convince me completely, neither does the blurred painting or the blue color that seems a bit pinkish (could be because of wrong white balance). Will we ever solve this riddle?
Birgit
Hi Julia and Shinigami,
I have the same opinion as both of you. The decoration (boys) doesn't look right. But the bottom is quite irritating me, it looks very Kangxi. And the glaze is ok. Could be late Kangxi ..... More HD photos may help. For Kangxi it should be a little bit heavier than it looks like.

To me true Kangxi always looks elegant, no matter if it's a more expensive piece like the Sotheby's one or just a small export piece. Although the differences in quality in the boys jar are obvious, I'm still not sure what Mr Rusty has there. I would say a modern copy but the jar itself looks as it has some age. My guess is around 1900, but this is pure speculation. Does someone know more?
This kind of jars are not copied at the beginning of 20th C.

Hi all,
It's great that this jar has sparked such an in depth discussion - the bottom jar in the Chinese website photos bears the closest resemblance. No problem at all with some more photos, anything in particular that we could take a close up of?
It is a puzzle! I don't know, maybe it is Kangxi and the painter had an off day!
All I have been able to dig up since is this 19th century example but it isn't blue and white.
The boys are more squashed into their frame but still not as much as Mr Rusty's. From what I can see the shape has changed to a more 19th c one whereas Mr Rusty's looks older.
Best wishes,
Julia
Hi Julia,
Well done for unearthing the fascinating photo of the 19thC example which really seems to point towards ours being an earlier one - this has a sketchier feel around the collar, whereas some of the older examples are very similar overall despite the 'Friday afternoon' paint job. Wish we had the lid!
Xin, if there are any more images that might help (maybe of the interior?) just let me know - and thanks again for your thoughts.
So at the moment it looks like it could be either a rush job, or a more provincial version of the original scheme?
Hi again,
As suggested some more close-up images of the jar. All in focus to the best of my ability - it's the boys that are blurred.
One more for luck!
Thanks. Why would the boys be blurred? I have a jar (fairly modern I think but blue and white) and part of the decoration on that is blurred.
Kiln conditions or smudged transfer?
I really am at a loss to explain the nice foot/shape with the jarring decoration. Could it have been decorated later on? I think I know the answer is no.
Best wishes,
Julia
