Hello Guys:)
I found this ginger jar, I think it is from the 19th century, but I'm not sure. Would you help me?:)
letters remind me of an early Kangxi's pattern
I think your ginger jar is from the 2nd half of the 20th century.
If you rub your finger along the inside and it feels or looks very smooth then it's a later production. If it's slightly rippled/other then it indicates it was scooped out by hand rather than machine. The inside base bottom looks like made in the 19th century but these are being produced today. If it was say from the mid 19th century then one would see some kiln grit. Earlier and later produced did not have this issue.
Yours looks very smooth from the picture posted and therefore in my opinion a later product.
Mark
I think this jar is a late republic period product. The tone of the cobalt blue and base structure made me think so. There are also some spots and ripples on its surface. I think the patterns on the surface are skillfully drawn and painted.

Hi 88Teo88 -
Not really my area but the decoration is copying a well know Kangxi period design, which was utilised again in the late 19thC ...
I would only add that the glaze appears very 'white' and there appears to be little/no signs of age/ware to the surface, mouth/foot-rims ...
Stuart
Thank you so much Guys:))
When I tried to find this vase yesterday. I found a very similar vase too, what I posted 1 year ago and Xin said to me that it is an old Japanese copy of late Ming, but he didn't know when it was made. and the similar vase was sold on:
and the title: "Japanese Arita blue and white vase and cover, circa 1680"
Would my vase be from the same period? What do you think?
ohh and I found a similar one on wikipedia:
but it seems absolutely genuine piece, or both later copies? or just mine?
wiki
My feeling is that yours is a copy but without seeing the mouth and the foot plus the actual shape, it is hard to tell when from. I am not an expert like Xin so all I can say is that it does seem quite different from genuine 17th c examples.
Hi 88Teo88 -
Again, not my area but would concur with Julia - very difficult to pass any opinions on the single image posted ...
Stuart
Hi:))
My feeling is the same, but I saw that piece on the "www.chinese-porcelain-art.com" therefore I got a little confused. because that piece on Wikipedia is absolutely genuine and different, but this piece: " ?ssl=1" is very similar and it was sold by the same title: Arita 1680
my piece: (footrim is a bit dirty)
Hi,
I can see your point. Unfortunately the Japanese porcelain pages are not opening on that site. They handle a lot of porcelain and I have found the site to be a good source of information. I would have liked to see the jar in more detail on there.
As I said, I am no expert but these are things that bother me in comparison with genuine items. The glaze seems very glossy. It looks better on the inside, though. The painting style on arita appears to me to be more precise, cleaner somehow and with flatter colours. The base doesn't look right. The base looks more later 19th c Chinese.
In fact if I saw elements of this jar ie not the shape or the people just the base, the colour, the style of painting, that is what I might have said it was. I even wondered if it might be a later 20th c Chinese copy of an 18th c Arita jar but that could leave a question about the one on Guest and Gray.
The other option is that this is not a matter of dating but of quality ie they are all from the same period with variations in the quality (and market value) of the product. That happens all the time, people with less money wanting things that the wealthy are buying. Whether that would fit this scenario, I don't have the expertise to tell.
These are just my thoughts. 😊
Julia
Thank you so much Julia:)
I found this jug from the same period:
That dealer has quite a few early arita pieces. Sorry I can't be much help, but Xin is very good and if he said it is a copy it probably is.
However, it might be worth trying to clean up the base and seeing how it compares.
Julia
THank you so much Julia:))
Here is the footrim of the arita jug
