Hi Guys:)
I have found this brush pot, and looks interesting to me, what do you think? would it be old?
Thank you so much: Teo:)
I think it's fantastic. Love the way they did the top. Can you show a picture of the underside?
Nice brush pot. I would suggest late 18th to early 19th century...
with Best Regards...
Carsten
I think it is Japanese… Taisho period. I sold a wonderful brush pot with Bonhams of different design, but similar high quality.
I’m basing my opinion that it is Japanese because of the ruffled mouth, and the bamboo ribbing left on the sides.
Chinese brush pots generally have uniform round mouths and bodies when they are finely carved like this.
And the calligraphy marks seem more Japanese in style, too.
I sold this brush pot carved and signed by Ito Tesseki, a famous carver during the Taisho period.
Unfortunately, Bonhams made a catalog mistake and listed the piece as ‘Edo period’ without attribution. It still sold for a little over $3,000, but far less than what I had hoped.
They made good on their mistake in the end.
Hi Guys:)
Thank you so much for your answers, I'm sorry for the late answer, I wasn't at home, but now I have taken some photos outside, ohhh... I forgot, I bought 2 brush pots, but that one I uploaded looked interesting to me:) but the other one is also here:
the photos of the first one:
at the bottom it looks like a label with numbers and calligraphic símbols, and I tried to take photos of the little carvings, I think that would be the signature, but I'm not sure
Thank you so much: Teo:)
oops... I try to find a similar one and this one on ebay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/253724207718
looks similar in age and style, but the quality is different maybe:)
but that's the truth I have never had a bamboo brush pot in my hands and I have only seen them on screen
Does it look like it has 2 signatures?
@88teo88 I agree that it is the scalloped top that sets your piece apart from the rest.
I think the one with the overflowing water (?) is Republic period. Or as Tim says, Taisho maybe early Showa if Japanese. I think it is Chinese, but am not certain. The label could be an old shop label.
Until recently, they were selling brushpots with similar top edges on aliexpress, but the decoration was very different and I didn't notice ripples of water cascading down.
The other could be late qing or a bit after, I find these hard to evaluate and I have only had a few, mainly Chinese. There are many bamboo ones like the other piece and unless they are sold by well-regarded dealers, I am never sure if the age has been determined by hope rather than knowledge. Someone may be able to judge it better by the carving, but I am out of my depth there. 😊
Thank you Julia:) @julia I have checked those pieces, but these ones are different I think
Thank you Mark:) @imperialfinegems I tried to find similar pieces, and the first one is similar in style, but the faces are different, and the second one is maybe okay, but looks older:

Thank you Sharon 🙂 @sharonp
Thank you Greeno 🙂 @greeno107 I don't know... I feel that "old piece" feeling on your brush pot, but I don't feel that feeling on mine, but maybe I'm wrong, because I have never had a bamboo brushpot
Thank you John and Brian:) I uploaded some photos of the bottom @johnshoe , @lotusblack
I don't have that old feeling, but the label on the bottom shows the opposite as suggested by julia
ohh... I forgot something, there is a mark 木 many times in the little carvings, means wood, tree
but I think this one is the signature:
maybe this one is the first character: 辽 , but I have been still trying 😀
hmm 辽 ? 幺
@88teo88 Not an expert on the subject of brush pots, but I have a few Japanese bamboo pots, and have sold the few Chinese ones I’ve owned.
Subject matter is often similar because Japanese and Chinese shared similar themes in their literati studies.
I think Japanese tend to include more organic style, a-symmetry, and a looseness in their calligraphy.
I’ve noticed the proportions of the pots differ… Japanese tend to be slender… Chinese more broad.
I like your wavy topped brush pot. Not a fan of the 2nd, which reminds me of Canton style of carving.
