Hey Folks,
Bought what I thought was a dinner plate and it ended up being a 13" charger. Not complaining, but I had a customer for it if it was a dinner plate, someone else will buy it eventually I am sure. Anyone recognize the pattern? I'm guessing Qianlong.
Jeremy
I don't know it, but imo it should be called the mooing cow pattern. Hopefully it turns out to be a great rarity! John
I prefer "mooing cow pattern" to "water buffalo pattern"... But so far this is what I have found.
Seems uncommon, but at least I know its got a basis.
Jeremy
It's lovely! Is the other cow looking down from a cloud in bovine heaven?
It will look great on a wall.
S
The palms are home to some large, cute insects, too!
@jbeer2121 Wonderful charger! Glad to see that the lack of info on the size worked in your favor. Reminds me of a funny story...
I responded to an ad on Craigslist one time. The seller advertised they had an authentic set of 19th c. Japanese samuria armor - $100.
The photo looked good, and as crazy cheap as the armor was listed, I suspected it was reproduction, but I made arrangements to go see it, again, without asking much about it (I didn't want to blow the deal if it turned out to be a real treasure).
My wife and I went to the house selling the armor, and on the way over, my wife asked how we were going to fit a big suit of armor in our car, a small sedan. I explained that the armor would fit fine, that in the 19th c. and earlier, Japanese people were not very big, and that the armor should fit easily in the back seat area. The conversation stopped there, and we arrived.
My wife and I try and keep our comments to ourselves while we are at someone's house to buy because we know people's feeling get hurt if you say the wrong thing, so we either buy or pass... we don't try and negociate or discuss authenticity at the risk of insulting the buyer.
So, we arrived. The house was quite nice (very high end) and an older gentleman opened the door and welcomed us in. He was very excited to show us the armor and began to rattle off the history of how he acquired it, but we had not yet seen the piece at this point.
After about 15 minutes of listening to the man's story, finally, he brought us to a room where the armor was displayed. There, on a small center table, stood a stand with the samurai armor - 15" tall... obviously made for a doll.
I can't explain why it had not occured to me to ask about size, or if the item was doll clothes... perhaps because it was so well made and looked good in the photos. And, while it was clear it was no 'treasure', I bought it anyways without speaking one word because I was really embarassed for having wasted this old man's time, and he was so obviously taken by the quality of the piece (which personally I did not share), that I didn't have the heart to refuse to pay him his $100. So, we paid, and left.
On the way back, my wife was very quiet, but finally she spoke, 'I knew you said that the Japanese people were small in the 19th c., but I didn't know they'd be THAT SMALL!"
I turned my head to look if she was serious, or it was a dig at me for making such a bad buy. While my wife is a very bright woman, she grew up in Iquitos, Peru, on the Amazon River, not exactly the mecca of world history.. So, it was clear by the look on her face... she was serious.
I almost drove off the road laughing, and ever since, we both enjoy telling the story.
Tim,
Thanks, it is quite pretty....
I'm laughing my head off right now as I admit if I had a bunch of 15" tall samurai charging at me I would be terrified, though I suspect most would, new nightmare material unlocked.
You remind me of the time I bought 32 plate Kabuto, thinking it was full size on ebay, nearly 15 years ago.... I received this teeny tiny box, and was absolutely floored that it was in fact a hand wrought iron 32 plate for a doll, possibly the best protected doll in the world.
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 yeah, I might be able to hold my own for at least a little while against some 8-10 inchers, but with 15 inchers I'm not liking my chances. Full retreat!!!
@greeno107 I’m about to go to work and you made my day with that funny story. Were you able to resell the piece or do you still own it?
Birgit
@shinigami If he gave it to his daughter there could be a samurai barbie doll floating around the house somewhere.
I just got what I think is a Daoguang tankard and have to add it to this thread. Though I had read about it being 15,5 cm (6") high I somehow expected a normal sized drinking vessel and already feared I had overpaid. But the thing is huge! Almost like a small bucket. As large as one of the Oktoberfest beer glasses that hold 1 litre.
Birgit
Birgit, that's a lovely tankard. Was it made for the Persian market? It looks very like some pieces I saw earlier, today in a flip-book that either Jeremy or John posted a few months back. Please post more pictures if you get time. I would like a better look, it looks beautiful.
