Hello, this piece was on e-bay today , on BIDAMOUNT, and went for 15-20 $, not me sadly. The pair went for less, that piece wan not on the" e-bay today bidamount".
Was it a steal ? Is it 18th century Famile Rose?
As usual, a big thank you !
Best regards
Michael
Thank you Birgit! So e-bay today pieces on Bidamount, are not 100% fail proof for authenticity ...
I might also be wrong with my judgement, let’s wait for other opinions. But I think that mistakes can happen on Bidamount considered the many items they scan. Or Ebay has replaced a sold item by something else.
Birgit
I don't think it is Chinese either. The black lines look printed/transfered, color filled in afterwards. My guess would be that it is British, 19th century.

I don't think it is Chinese. The foot is wrong and it has numbers on the back like many 19th c British plates. It reminds me a little of some of the "candlelight patterns" so-called because they look good in the light of candles on the dinner table.
I agree Michael, it’s a late 19th century plate, probably Staffordshire. It appears to have the pattern number 1731 on the back.
Nic
Hi Micheal -
I concur with the above comments - certainly not Chinese ...
I know very little of such to say whether it is 19th C British/European - so will defer to others here ...
Stuart
My apologises for the miss-spelling Michael - wrong letter pressed ...!!? ?
Stuart
Thank you for the answers ! This is the pair, it has no numbers on the back, I understand, numbers can be added later in the life of a porcelain piece.
In my opinion, this two pieces are beautiful, maybe that is why one of them was on e-bay today, or maybe a small mistake.
Hi,
I don’t know whether numbers were sometimes added later. The plate in your recent post may not have the pattern number but does have a typically British potter’s mark:
As someone else mentioned, these plates are transfer printed then overpainted, here are some closeups of the transfer having not quite been applied carefully enough:
I believe this is a typical mid-late 19th century European (likely Staffordshire) plate. Did you say that one of these plates was on the Bidamount marketplace page?
Nic
I’ve had a look at the shopping pages and cannot see it. Sold items usually stay on the list for a while. If this is a Chinese porcelain plate, I apologise in advance! I would be shocked if that was the case, but am always happy to learn. ?
Nic
I agree Nic, second plate has a typical mark found on 19th c British pottery. Besides, I have not seen Chinese borders with what looks like little gold dots attached to the gold line. That seems to be either an interpretation of Chinese patterns or a misunderstanding of them, presumably arising from it not having been a Chinese person who designed it.
Hello All,
Good observation skills all around. Don't know for sure but on the buy it now pages if you scroll down far enough there are the raw search buttons with a warning to take care as the items are not vetted, maybe Michael found him self there... I know I have done it on late night searches.
Michael
Julia - I agree. I think there are stylistic similarities too. Here’s a mixed bag of close-up shots of some of the elements on this plate and some items of British pottery that I have. They’re all inspired by Chinese design, rather than being Chinese. As you say, the potters and painters may never have seen any Chinese porcelain. Pottery workers were unlikely to have access to such expensive ware.
I feel that these plates broadly fit into the Mason’s genre of design.
Brett - Yes, I have too in the past. I don’t click on them any more, I get confused by what was and was not on the list!
Nic

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
