Can anyone confirm when this looks to have been made? My suspicion is sometime in the 18th C. Also, has anyone seen this design before with the band of flowers and butterflies around the central scene? And can anyone explain what the scene depicts exactly? Thank you!
I think Birgit is correct. I would say definitely not 18th; it could be late 19th. Is that orange peel causing the reflection to wave or just blurriness?
I feel there is a rose mandarin look to the butterfly border and the way the figures are drawn. I seem to remember hearing or reading that the less realistic the head/body proportion, the more recent it is. I also saw a plate recently, with a very similar style border especially the butterflies (only heavily gilded) which I think was early 20th c.
From what I can see from the photos, I am thinking Guangxu period or a little after.
I had to really look to find the armorial device which is tiny, and surely would not have been commissioned like that in the C18th.
This is an unusual object imo, the footrim is not what you would expect for C18th , I suppose it could be early C20th , but no-one in Jingdezhen was fulfilling family commissions for export at that time - possibly it's a one off Canton piece?
The other possibilty is that it's a modern confection of various design elements and styles - the gilding looks a bit recent to me.

Looking again at the close-up, it seems that some of the panting was done in that water-colour style? Wasn't that common in the 1910s, 1920s?
I agree the armorial bit is odd on this plate. It doesn't seem to fit. It apparently belongs to the Seton family (Scotland) or is similar to that, I haven't actually compared the look of them, just a few details.
Definitely not modern - quality of decorations is really good, modern copies are far from that. Figures are nicely done, same goes for border pattern with flowers and butterflies - I really like all of that. INHO early to mid 20th C but not later than that, after 40s they basically completely lost the quality still present here.
Nice and interesting plate, don't resell it too easily 🙂 Do more research and you will get 100% assurance in terms of the date.
Kind regards,
Adrian

Thanks everyone for chiming in. I thought I would upload a few pictures of it's companion piece which is this basket. Very similar decoration but quite different footrim. Would love to hear if this confirms previous assessments or causes any of you to revise your opinions regarding date?
Just found this example dated to early 19th C. Looks to be from the same service.

Here's a whole different service with the same family crest that was done just 10-15 years prior to the one above. Wish I had all the other pieces!
Hi John,
I am glad that sparked an interesting line of research for you. The pieces you found are lovely but I would just add a word of caution in that, to my eye, there is a difference in quality between Polly Latham's items and yours. If you study the pictures carefully, you will see what I mean.
