Dear Forum members,
The auction house Herman Wilkinson in Dublin has recently started to hold occasional auctions of Asian art. Members may like to check the catalogue for their forthcoming sale next Wednesday, 4 July.
The catalogue leaves a lot to be desired in terms of its descriptions, and strikes me as amateurish in many ways. Yet, having said that, lot 42, a yellow ground and green enamelled dragon bowl, Qianlong mark and period, is absolutely right. I've had a look at it, and it's also in great condition.
The link to the catalogue is:
https://auctions.hermanwilkinson.ie/auctions/1-LZ0DQ/asian-art-auction?page=2&limit=36
I will watch future sales at this auction house. If it seems to me that among lots that may best be avoided there are also ones that have saving graces and that are recommendable, like this dragon bowl, I will let Forum members know.
Best wishes,
Alan
Thanks, Alan. Interesting. I see what you mean about the catalogue; shame the photos aren't better and a zoom function would be nice only I couldn't see one.
Best wishes,
Julia
Thanks Peter, Most grateful.
I am guessing the prices infer that many items are modern reproductions.
Dear Short Dong,
I think some are modern, yes, but not all are. It's a mixed bag. But those that are good seem to me to be very, very good. Lot 42, for example, is authentic. I've just come back from inspecting the lots personally as they're on view in Dublin today. The auction happens tomorrow.
Alan
Hi Alan
I went to the auction today. Never in my wildest dreams did i think it possible until today that you could buy anything you wanted for almost nothing. I wish i had read your post i could have said hello.
Here is lot 42.
I got this for 15 euro.
Chinese late Qing Dynasty mother of pearl inlaid panel
60 - 80 euro
I got a good few items but i also got this for 55 euro, It was actually very beautiful on closer inspection. I bought it on instinct and never even had a chance to examine it before bidding. Everyone was admiring it after the auction and reckoned it was worth well over 250 euro, inside it was very fine and exquisite detail.
This sold for 5 euro.
I examined this and it had chatter marks on the base, and was such a bargain, it went for 4o or 45 euro. About £35
This sold for 20 euro and was a huge vase
These sold well under ask price, under 60 euro. They were fairly well sized.
This sold for a fraction of the asking price.
These sold for almost nothing 🙂
This sold for 80 euro
THIS SOLD FOR 100 euro!! Like what the hell.
I snatched this for 5 euro 🙂
Went for peanuts.
All i can say is never ever miss this auction again. It may not have amazing pieces but by golly it does have amazing prices.
Next Auction is in November. They have this auction only 2 times per year, so i think one to watch,
This sold to Beijing China for 11k
Appears you had a good time there.
Not surprised by the result of lot#42.
Mark
Short Dong, notice lot 202, looks like your disputed misrepresentated item vase.
Dear Short Dong,
You did very well with lot 62. It was in lovely condition and the lacquer work was fine. I noticed also the famille rose Tibetan style ewer that you've illustrated - yes, certainly a reproduction, but for €100, it went for nothing.
Did you inspect lot 42, the Qianlong dragon bowl, before the Beijing bidder bought it? It was in perfect order. In fact, at €11,000 under the hammer, the bidder did rather well. I have seen these make much more than that.
Best wishes,
Alan
Hi Alan
Thank you 🙂
I never got to examine lot 42. I was late to the auction and needed a coffee and never really got a chance to check it out. I had thought origionally that Peter started the thread on this Auction, but i realise that Your the man that started the thread. So i cannot thank you enough Peter, that was a very exciting day for me. So thank you so much mate.
A really good day out, and i really enjoyed that auction it was wonderful to see it all happen live like that. I was very disappointed with the prices many pieces fetched, they sold well below value if one compares to Ebay for example. Then again Ebay still and always will have great bargains.
Well, I will most certainly try make the November auction and i Hope you you make it too Alan, but this time i will bring a ton of cash :).
Edit: 'I can't thank you enough Alan' 🙂 I keep mentioning Peter.
I just wish i had more time to inspect the entire selection.
Short Dong, notice lot 202, looks like your disputed misrepresentated item vase.
Ha Ha
Yes, Just to be a rebel I got it that jar for 5 euro ( no £20 postage on that ) .
However, it is no where near the quality of the disputed vase/Jar, but in all fairness you can get the better quality jars by the dozen for a few quid on ebay.
Appears you had a good time there.
Not surprised by the result of lot#42.

Yes, It was a good fun auction. When Lot 42 rolled up, it was done with typical Irish Charm. They paused the Auction and announced they had to get Beijing on the Phone. So the auction had to wait during a very long pause until they contacted Beijing, while yer man dials up Beijing in China. 🙂 Then he says over the phone, yeah 11k and the auctioneer interrupts and with great confidence shouts no Stephen, we shall bid at 8,500 euro. I think they had another bidder, so it ran quickly to 11k and then it went to Beijing for 11k 😉
