Hey to you all,
I‘d like to know your opinion on this Vase that is currently on auction. It closes tomorrow so I can‘t send an inquiry to Peter on time.
I really like the Birds and would like to bid on it. The seller claims it to be Kangxi, but in my eyes the paste is way to impure for that and it looks more like a 19. century revival piece.
Anyway I don‘t feel like I am able to judge this as I am fairly new to all of this.
So your thoughts would be quite helpful.
Regards
Robin
I agree with Birgit. This is not a genuine Kangxi example.
What's the price estimate and size?
Mark
Thanks for the quick reply.
It is sold on ebay by a german seller. Currently it is very cheap at 15€.
It is 21 cm tall and I really like it. But I won´t bid on it only for the decorative look. I attach the link.
Mark, what do you think? Is it at least 19. century?
Regards
Robin
Hi Robin S,
Thank you for your additional pictures.
It's not really my area. I think this is a modern copy. The birds and flowers are very stiffly done.
I would definitely defer to others who have more experience with these types of wares.
Mark
Thanks. Think I got a bit too excited about that one.
If someone knows this type of ware and thinks that it isn’t a modern copy I’d still like to hear it 🙂
Regards
Robin
That repair is horrible. I wonder why the seller has not provided a full on shot so that buyers can clearly see the added branch. I know the repair is mentioned but I would expect to see a detailed photo of it.
In the text he says that he sells the remains of his private collection. He already sold some late Qing/Republic items but wasn’t a great collector as far as I can judge from the few items still visible, nor is he a professional seller. He probably bought the vase as Kangxi.
Birgit
I would not bid it at all. The pattern is obvious from mid 19th century but others are nowhere,
Yes, Robin, I meant the three as one main branch with 2 others coming off it. It looks a mess, especially where the main branch has been tucked down into the original decoration.
I wouldn't buy it either. As Birgit said he probably bought it believing it was Kangxi; maybe the repair helped convince him it was older.
Julia
I came across what looked like a Kangxi vase today, complete with the artisanal leaf on the foot. It was covered in seashells. Not sure if shipwreck or a copy. It sure looked genuine to me, but I think I remember someone saying even these are faked. It was also broken and put back together. I should have taken pics...overpriced regardless at $1000 I imagine, for a heavily repaired item.
So, my question would be.... a vase which has 30% of its surface obscured by seashells. How does this affect the value? Thanks, Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hi Todd, a vase covered with seashells is rather suspicious. I have seen and bought a few underwater finds but none of them have more than a few traces of seashells. They try to clean them as much as possible before selling. The most prominent feature is the worn off glaze.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Ok, I see. I may go back next weekend. Maybe I will take a few pics for curiosity’s sake and post them here. I really would like to know if its genuine.
Thanks, Todd
