The name "Pickersgill" made me think the article was fictional. It is not:
Thanks for posting this. It's a real problem how so many valuable items are lost, forgotten about, or stolen from the elderly.
Don't you have the name Pickersgill in America? Or does it have some other meaning?
I was thinking of "pickers," which is slang for reselling and "gill" being fishy.
...they were fishy pickers.
Oh, I see. Glad that isn't my surname, then. 🤣
@rahawkins Now they shall have time to reflect. Unfortunately, the old term penitentiary does not really apply to the American prison system, it is not about penance, it is all about punishment, not sure about the British system. Here, I believe they could expect to do about 20% of their time before becoming elligible for parole, depending on priors. It is possible that someone given opportunity, suddenly becomes a thief, but it is unlikely. Hopefully, they will use their time well, especially in the case of the 82 year old, our American system has been known to suddenly find compassion when the prisoner begins to cost money for medical care.
Yeah, when the elderly start to deteriorate, it is often the case that no one would really need to keep them arrested, they just sort of are arrested due to immobility or mental status changes.
If nonviolent, early release is probably for the best. Otherwise youre paying a police officer to sit in the hospital watching someone who isnt dangerous.
