I am in New England at the moment. Which museum would you recommend for Chinese porcelain? Chatgpt says:

The remaining time as well as lacking interest in half of the traveling party (husband) allows only for one or two museums. Any recommendations?

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Peabody Essex both hold excellent Asian collections. They two would be my choice …

@gfhandel When we visited Gloucester a couple of years ago, I was too shy to contact Peter. But we saw his office building downtown and had an amazing time.
@ming1449 I totally agree with Stuart, here. Both museums are not to be missed, especially the Peabody in Salem. Worth it for the Chinese house alone!
The Fine Arts Museum in Boston was great. I was able to see the famous wooden Guanyin. As a part of the rooms was closed there was less porcelain than I had expected but the descriptions were very good.
The Metropolitan museum in New York left me a bit disappointed because the Asian wing was closed and the remaining space mostly taken up by a bronze exposition. They showed a few Ming vases on the walls of a noisy cafe.

Hi Birgit,
The Peabody Essex Museum is built around the maritime trading history of the region, including fortunes made from opium sales; its Chinese collection primarily excels in export art. The MFA has more ceramics in Chinese taste, but very little dedicated display space--one hallway on the ground floor, and a few pieces in a hall dedicated to Song objects, I believe. (The MFA also has a superb collection of early paintings but similarly displays few if any at any given time.) If you have the time, perhaps reach out to Sarah Laursen or Yan Yang at Harvard for an appointment to see the numbered jun ware there.
The Met bronzes exhibit includes the large Percival David ru censer, did you happen to see it? Lots of the Met's own colorful Ming/Qing items are removed from their cases at the moment due to construction of some sort. The galleries where the bronzes were showing typically are filled with paintings.

Yes I saw and admired the ru censer. It also made me smile because I remembered a former forum member who was convinced he owned one of the rare ru pieces.

@shinigami There is a great museum in Springfield Massachusetts as well with one of the greatest cloisonne collections you will ever see. Plus many other fantastic Asian pieces.
That sounds interesting. I'm afraid time is running out but I put it on my list.
