I've held a fascination for the work and mind of a famous Chinese artist whose name we all know. I have pointed out his works to others who have bought them when I felt they were token works or my situation prevented it. I'm now hunting his fakes. Not so much his fakes purported to be Song dynasty etc but his fake artists.
This fellow was truly in a class of his own. He invented artists and gave them a style and a profile, cross signing with him, having his fakeartistA authenticate fakeartistB by writing colophons etc for each other. All the great auction houses have been fooled. Every one of them. Many collectors were fooled.
Has anyone ever heard of an artist creating hand-fulls of ancient colleagues all based on the flimsiest of historic snippets and then getting their works into auctions? Not one or two, but dozens? I can only imagine how much money he made and completely understand his fondness for old silk and paper. A very keen buyer.
This does leave us in the situation where there are a lot of works out there by the artist in styles he never signed except in the fake persona. They are good. His calligraphic skill was truly extensive.
Do you think his fakes of other real artists are worth money, of course they are. What about his works by completely fake made-up artists?
I guess he did it for a laugh and to not swamp the market with his works.
Would you keep quiet and just hunt them down and buy them? They all sell for far less than his works, but aren't cheap?
Anyway I'm having a laugh, not nearly as big a laugh as he did.
That sounds intriguing but I am not sure I follow. Are you saying a well-known Song dynasty artist worked under other names pretending they were different artists who all knew of each other and no one has realised?
Not exactly. This recent artist was infamous for faking Chinese art as far back as the Song. He fooled everyone, all the big museums etc.
He also created whole other artist identities, more commonly of a later period because of the technical difficulty of faking very old. His solution was to go and buy any old silk or paper from monasteries etc to allow him to more easily fake (not really fake because although the name might exist, they weren't a painter etc) more recent works from 1600's onwards depending on the availability of the materials.
I guess it worked out well when you had a wealthy collector, who might buy one or two of your works but could easily be persuaded to buy a couple of more old works from your collection'. Presto, more income, no impact on your own works i.e. you don't swamp the market.
I enjoyed a book about art forgery that I think @william recommended by Shaun Greenhalgh, A Forgers Tale, Confessions of the Bolton Forger. I suppose there have been forgers forever, probably as soon as the caveman put his hand-print on a wall, another Neanderthal "aped" it.
I'm seeing if I can afford a few of the new line of forgeries/fabrications I've discovered. Given his own works can now be worth more than those of the artists he forged or outright 'created' there might be some room for profit and dinner table conversations. The skill shown should only enhance the artist's reputation and demand for his works.
According to someone who knew him well, he started early with willing accomplices and didn't stop until late in his career.
