@imperialfinegems Thanks Matrk, the little dish really packs a punch and I'm thrilled with it. I think your vases are stunning and I was also the only bidder for my little shallow dish. It was one of the 'Leave a bid' tactics that Peter goes on about. Actually I've managed to pick up a few pieces like that including Persian carpets.
I think that the buffalo bowl was advertised as Meilii period but it seems that everything is Meiji period these days. Sellers get their information from AI and AI is hopeless. I've noticed the same AI syntax popping up in the descriptions all over the place and one auction house even acknowledged that they were using AI to describe one of their lots. I only looked at one lot so they may have been using AI for many more. I now look at the seller's 'other items' and if they are a general dealer then I disregard their descriptions completely and make up my own mind. I only buy things that I like so either way it doesn't really matter.
@imperialfinegems Oh boy, Kinkozan, now that is, "the joy of beauty."
P.S. I bought this in the eighties on a shopping trip to Dallas. It could possibly be a little older, but not much. As an example of not trusting A.I., for grins I hit it the other day and it came back with "it gears the signature "Painted by Takada at Kutani, indicating the artist as Takada Reizan."
His dates make that impossible, since he worked in the Meiji period, so that was a good laugh and caused me to go back through my file and one of our members no longer active, had identified the signature for me as Baizan and the character on Ebisu's robe as Kotubuki, "Long Life," working so far. I was attracted by the hand applied gold gilding on hie sleeves and shirt front, drew my eye in the decorating shop and of course, his fancy pants.
Sorry, it has been a busy summer and I haven’t been checking The Forum until recently. I do like this topic and I should mention that I have a lifelong love of monochromes, especially unusual or rare ones.
I have acquired an extraordinary monochrome vase recently. This was sold to me as an eel-skin vase of the 18th century.
The pattern of the glaze is truly spectacular. The vase is about 11” high and has a great presence for it’s size.
For me personally, its everything I think. Im drawn to most asian designs, be it color, shape or history alone. The research is what drives me and finding something unique to another is always a fun deep dive, sometimes rewarding, sometimes personally enriching with others. Its almost lost documentation which just drives my attention to it all. There is no specific must have, its just a passionate drive and dive for me to share with. Sometimes its about just listening to what speaks to you, and taking it from there.
It was interesting in several ways regarding this multi-generational dealer. The first Sidney Moss had a reputation for really good restoration of Asian ceramics and when I looked inside the vase with a bright light, I saw a plugged hole in the center bottom of the vase. Conveniently covered by the sticker! It has been lamped in the past. This also explained some additional damage to the top rim that was told to me by the dealer.
I had originally seen this vase years ago on the way-over priced decorator website, 1stDibs. It was too expensive for my budget! Then earlier this year, a friend & myself drove out to Round Top for the antique show. I struck up a conversation with one of the Asian Dealers in the show regarding Chinese ceramics (he had mostly Japanese things in his booth). I mentioned this Eel skin vase I had seen on-line and he laughed and said it was his on consignment for an exorbitant price. He said he would be happy to sell it to me for a more reasonable price. I laughed and said I would be in touch later.
A couple of months later, he contacted me again and we were able to come to an agreement on price. He said he would drive over from Austin when he got back from Paris and would bring the piece for my inspection. I said I would provide lunch when he arrived. At the last minute, he stated that he was bringing his mother to Houston and would that be a problem? I told him no, and then made a last minute change to the lunchtime menu. We actually had a lovely luncheon with wine that put everyone into a very good mood. The vase turned out to be his mother’s piece and I was happy to give her a check. I have never seen another example with that spiral effect in my life time.
