Hey all,
Interesting piece arrived today. It stands at 17 inches by 15 inches (w/ lid). It has 4 frogs around the top half of the jar. The vessel patina has small crystal spots scattered throughout, embedded into the clay inside and out. The gray skin has flaked edges throughout which appear to be natural. The dirt around it is varied as well. The clay beneath has a fine burnishing of oranges to deep brown reds.
Is this of the period?
I forgot to mention, I did do some digging into the applique sculptures since theyre odd and somewhat unique to the piece in comparison to other wares from the period. A good example is posted in the NMK collection under national treasure #195 (Mounted cup with figurines from tomb of King Michu, Gyeongju National Museum, Gyeongju). Considered Tou, or Clay Figurines, the frog is a guardian form. If it is period, this would be tomb related.

Granted, this example is a couple centuries earlier if so. Unified silla moved away from reticulated designs and transitioned to more solid concepts.
It's got a southeast Asian vibe with that Thai-like top.
Here's another Unified Silla covered jar. The stamped repeated decorations (like on your jar) are one thing that separates Unified Silla from earlier pieces, so that much fits.
What color is the underlying clay? In the first picture it appears to be orange, but I'm not sure if that's dirt I'm looking at.
And again in first picture, are those little stone/pebble inclusions in the clay? Or are they part of dirt layer on surface?
Pieces of the period are typically a dark grey, very dense (clean) stoneware.

The underlying is orange correct. It has a burnish to it throughout the flaked off skin areas around the body front. First photo, they appear to be inclusions to the clay as well throughout, its embedded inside and out. Per the chipped foot, its embedded into the clay which is exposed there. Even the skin on the inside shows these reflective pebble sparkles. I did come across one or two different earlier silla museum vessels which do show the same colored orange in the reticulated areas visible.

While I see what you mean about the dark colored clay being period, is it possible they also had different brightness like this? It might explain why this one is also brighter than typical period objects as a whole as well.
Further context of the skin color and clay can be found in the book Symbols of Identity hosted on the library here, page 27 is a great example of the color of the skin, 24 and around there have good examples of the clay too in mixed periods.
I sent it off to Peter to get more info since he collects a lot of Korean objects as well. Fingers crossed if its worth checking out.

@craig Peter got back to me, he believes its Thailand which fits @johnshoe detail about the finial lid. He noted the foot doesn't really fit the age suggested of the piece. The craftsmanship is above par, a nice pot still. Its tough to tell if its from the 14th-16th or later 20th century. He noted the wear on the foot isnt what it really should be, and the skin is likely applied intentionally. Im gonna go with his gut and call it contemporary and get it posted.
