Do you remember this vase that had an estimate of £1500 - £2000 that sold at wolley and wallis last year for £190,000? I think I remember a discussion on it here where people were saying "wow, obviously not qianlong but republic lucky vendor" I thought the same. Now Sotherbys are putting it up for auction less than a year later with an estimate of £1.2 million to £2 million. How can they be so sure? where is the provenance? the original vendor could have let it go for £1000. Is this a stitch up?

Sotheby’s has ways of testing things that we don’t on top of experts and references they have a comparable Im figuring. But 1.2 million geez
The shape and size are nifty, but for the most part I'm not that attracted to the decoration. Think I'll save my 1.2 mil for something else.
It happens happens a lot with Chinese ceramics. FYI imperially marked falangcai porcelains of this kind are among the most precious of Chinese antiques and the vase at Sotheby's is likely to sell well above its estimate IMHO.
It is noted in the description at Sotheby's that: "Grisaille landscapes are extremely rare on falangcai pieces, especially in the Qianlong reign."
In one of my searches I came across this Qianlong marked brushpot dated to the 20th century and with extensive repairments had sold for €96,900. Unfortunately I can't see what the estimate was but obviously bidders must have thought it was of the Qianlong period.
My question is how could Willey and Wallis pit a 7 figure vase for sale with a £1000 reserve, and Sotheby's pur it up for 7 figures

@lotusblack yes it's possible, it's not being sold at W and W but a good auction house recently bought by Lee Young (from the antiques road show). Dore and Rees. I'm just a bit concerned seeing what happened at W and W thou. I'm sure the owner would have taken it to Sotheby's himself in the past, as it says from a collection formed in the 70s. It would be tough to let it go for the reserve (800) and find it for sale next year at Sotheby's for a lot more. Is it possible the big auction houses do favours for their special clients? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? (John from W and W wanted to sell it, but at a reserve of 300..)

Having seen/handled, along with several very experienced collectors, before it was sold at Woolly' the overall concense was it was not Qianlong mark/period but a much later copy, probable 1960/70's - the overall painting and, more importantly 'feel', was very far from Imperial quality ...
However, ' the market has decided', so to speak ...

@ming1449 For this particular vase, in terms of the feel not being what you and others would have expected, are you able to talk specifics about how the feel was off? I'm curious if weight and density were a part of that and if so in which way? John
