Not every day you find two very large Longquan celadon double gourd vases a pair for $100 bucks. They look Ming period they are so thick just like my Yuan/Ming Longquan vase I own. They are also extremely heavy as you can see the firing cracks on the foot.
Awesome finds! Definitely looks Yuan/Ming.... I am curious is it just the pics that make the paste look white-ish, rather than gray? Also is there a protruding luting line inside where the two "orbs" meet? That is probably hard to see with the narrow neck, I am just curious.... I got to handle a Yuan one a few years ago, and I remember the alignment of the two halves being off slightly, leaving a protrusion. On Ming examples I have seen online, they look cleaner made.
Amazing vases, congrats.
Jeremy
Nice, but it's a little difficult to see if the decoration carved or incised?
And they appear rather big. What's the height of these?
If I were you I would hold on to these at least for a while untill they are correctly identified.
They could posiiblibly be early Ming and possibly have significant value if they are 50 cm or more and have a carved decoration.
It would be great if you could provide some sharper pics of the decoration.
I have a relevant link I can post. Also in regards to potential value of your vases ...
@jbeer2121 I will look inside to looting joint. I’m not convinced these are Ming period yet due to two factors one I don’t like the firing cracks from the weight another thing is the size 18 inches at 15 lbs each. Now that mean little as it’s known fact that they did make temple size vases. Longquan kilns were in the many hundreds to thousands. These could have been special order and that would explain some issues. Now the positive is they are not mirrored the foot and oxidation is correct. The cutting or inscribing is not an issues as I’ve seen many variations. If these are modern they were expensive they would have cost a lot to ship 30+ Pound vases in a large create.
@avatar your concerns are valid if authentic they would be considered very rare. As for size 18 inches. The lighting yesterday was horrible so the pictures suck. But these are not molded they are carved as the design is not exact from each other. The size might have something to sue the the level of carving. If 15 lbs after firing they would have been much heavier wet.
Thanks for clarifying. 45 cm is certainly also a decent size for such vases. Now the library is closing so I must with further posting untill I get home.
Back home at last. This was the link I had in mind. Now you can read the lot essay yourself but you can see how the color of your vases matches perfectly with the vase at Christie's and why I would consider a carved decoration rather than a incised decoration ...

@avatar thank you for the link. I have taken some more pictures in natural light and of the inside. My research has lead me to an opinion either these are authentic or a copied pair made to deceive. Why I say this is the chipped foot is common on authentic pieces also the foot firing tears are also common on authentic pieces. The oxidation on the inside walls are also common if a modern potter created these features to replicate Ming period Longquan vases it was an attempt to deceive.
Thank for the pics. I can see that your vases have a pronounced crackle of the glaze but I am not sure if they are the same quality as the vase at Christie's and they might be made later into the Ming dynasty. So I am afraid I can't help you much further.
But you can alway send pics to Peter to get his opinion.
