I was at an antique shop recently and was chatting with the owner as I prepared to buy a few items. One was this necklace that I thought could be jade. The owner had it hanging up with about 20 or 30 other silver chains, all priced at $8 each. When it came time to pay he told me since I was buying the other couple of things, which he deemed a bit more valuable, he would just go ahead and throw in the necklace for free. At any rate, you guys are going to have to tell me if it is or if it ain't because I have little knowledge in this area. But either way, it is a very pretty color. I told my wife if it doesn't end up being imperial jade, she could have it. Aren't I romantic? John

You'll have to do the vinegar test. Just a small drop of vinegar on the surface then look through your loupe to see whether or not you see bubbles. I thinm it was william who tod me of the test.

I think this cabachon carving is fake. I see bubbles etc. If the setting is silver or plated this would in all probability confirm my suspicion.

I dont't think the stone is synthetic/imitaion just a cheap stone like for example green agate. The necklace has very little value. But clever thing to collect silver. Imperial jade need to have a rich green color that compares to the Color of the best emeralds. But then it is very, very, very valuable.

Perhaps I should clarify what I wrote. Good quality jade should always be set in gold not silver. With early 20th century you might find it set in silver. But for modern pieces highly unlikely. Especially noted with imperial quality!
That does not automatically mean that high grade or good quality is always set in gold either. Sometimes serpentine and fake are also set in gold.
So if you see a jade pendant set in modern silver it's likely to be either very low quality or fake/othrr jade simulation like agate.
The colour and translucency are very important when trying to determine quantity. Said post is likened to light apple green. If it was genuine jade then not very expensive.

@johnshoe The vinegar drop test was suggested by Charles Bryan, if it is jade the drop of vinegar will remain clear sitting on top of the stone under a loupe, if not then tiny bubbles appear in the vinegar drop under a loupe. I think the bubbles on the reverse that Mark sees may be from the glue used to hold the piece within the four prongs. Inexpensive silver set pieces of jade are available at store jewelry counters (like J.C. Penney, Macy's), often they have been dyed, but loose stones of what is advertised as natural jade is available from on-line gem sources and findings are also available, I have set some stones myself as gifts in four prong settings but I also glue them for added fit, as I can't stand a stone that wobbles in a prong setting. I agree that the best jaidite jade has the appearance of emerald. I had an old stone from my Mother-in-law reset in silver by a jeweler because the price of gold had become ridiculous, it was not jadeite jade, but nephrite, if it had been jadiete I might have sprung for gold. Charles Bryan warned me that if it is not jade, the vinegar might etch the stone, so if you test, you may want to test on center of reverse, also might stain the metal. Chrysophase was a popular substitute for jade in the forties. Sharon
P.S. Now that I think about it, that test was to differentiate my snow in moss jade from marble, I will have to further experiment to see if it applies to agate.
P.P.S. The drop remains clear to the surface on fire agate as well, so useless to determine jade from green agate, chrysophase.
