Wilken's in Toronto has an auction at the end of next month (Oct 29 & 30) that has a number of former Royal Ontario Museum pieces that were deaccessioned in 1969. The catalog is incomplete at the moment but has an interesting backstory: many pieces were purchased by the ROM from George Croft -- a fur trader with a post in Tianjin!
I am unsure of the accuracy or authenticity of the pieces but I would think you could double check museum records for accession numbers. (Which is what they said they did)
Two lots that struck me were porcelain vases done in a faux bronze style. I don't think I have seen porcelain carved like this before.

I also liked this collection of white crackle vases

I'm curious what the forum thinks of this auction, especially in regards to authenticity and accuracy.
Cheers,
Will
I have no idea regarding authenticity of those imitation bronze vases but they are rather impressive! Why are they called Guanyin form? I don't think I have heard that before.
I like the crackle wares - they are not something I know much about but they look ok to me. Very obviously, I could be wrong. Will window shop the rest of the catalogue when I get home from work. Thanks for sharing it.
Hi Will,
I have some reservation about this auction. Despite being many pieces dated as Kangxi, I have not seen a single one that can undoubtedly be Kangxi.
All the snuff bottles are of average, if not poor, quality. Not certainly snuff bottles that are expected to belong from a Museum.
Let see when all the other pieces will be available.
Regards
Giovanni
Thanks for your comments!
Even if fakes the porcelain bronzes look impressive to me. I'm not sure about the term... Maybe just a mistake?
I thought the white vases looked elegant. But I am very unclear on white porcelain.
Not every lot in the auction was from the museum. They were explicit in stating if a lot was from the ROM. They included the white wares, porcelain bronzes, faux Bois brush pot, famille noir vases, a few other things.
Of course a museum from back then could get things wrong. Or want to sell off more dubious pieces I imagine.
The other lots did seem to me variable in quality...
Cheers,
Will
The sale has now taken place. It seems like there was possibly an unidentified Qianlong mark and period vase available - sold for CDN 17,550 against a much lower estimate. https://ahwilkens.hibid.com/lot/56827672/green-sgraffito-ground-famille-rose-porcelain-vase/?q=&cpage=2&ref=catalog Shape is similar to this one sold at Sotheby's http://www.sothebys.com/fr/auctions/ecatalogue/2012/fine-chinese-ceramics-and-works-of-art-n08872/lot.24.html I have come across Qing dynasty period vases with the same lime green scraffito ground decorated with 'flying flowers' on a couple of occasions like for example this one at the Trocadero-site, where three further examples sold at the major auctions are mentioned in the text. I'll have to check out these when I find the time for it. https://www.trocadero.com/stores/ascotcourtantiques/items/1271026/Qianlong-Jiaqing-Sgraffito-Lime-Ground-Vase?fbclid=IwAR2IRF0aUMdW3eF6HhwCRJLMpD-g-c-sMwPMDENnDWmyZVLRLhkRqfsbe_o
There were some eye watering prices...
The faux bois brush pot was very pretty, but I don't know why it went north of 1 mill CAD.
I am not always sure how to interpret some of those results, although it seemed interesting that most of the high end ones had floor or phone bids pushing it up and not internet bids.
On the other hand, a lot of 6 ming/qing white ware vases I was interested in went for 936 CAD. (I wasn't paying attention when it went up).
Cheers,
Will
There is a Yongzheng mark and period 'faux bois' brush pot with famille rose design of figures in landscape as the main exterior band in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2018/01/02/36011493.html Two further examples with 'grisaille' landscapes has sold at Christie's. https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-fine-and-exceedingly-rare-faux-bois-6002172-details.aspx https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/an-extremely-rare-faux-bois-grisaille-decorated-landscape-5805111-details.aspx
Thanks for those references. It does seem to compare favourably doesn't it?
Cheers,
Will
It certainly does!
