The Catalog of FINE CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLES, by Robert Hall

Sold by public auction at The Grand Ballroom of The Ritz-Carlton, 15 Arlington Street, Boston, Massachusetts on thursday, October 10, 1991 at 7.30 pm by MAITRE VIVIANE  JUTHEAU , Paris France.

The auction back in 1991 was done to coincide with annual convention of the International Snuff Bottle Society under the auspices of Viviane Juheau, a renowned expert and researcher on Chinese Snuff's.  The introduction to this terrific catalog was written by the prominent Snuff bottle dealer and author Hugh Moss.  The  during the Robert Hall Snuff bottle auction the pieces sold on this day back in 1991 were among some of the finest examples sold at one time, in one place in the last half century.  The catalog itself has become a standard reference on the subject due to it's copious notes and meticulous descriptions for each lot.

The auction included numerous examples from the Imperial workshops, cast bronze mark and period pieces, Laque burgaute, fine coral and stunningly fine carved celadon green Nephrite bottles. In total the sale was comprised of 125 examples. This auction itself became important pedigree for the bottle sold on that day.

One of my many favorites was lot 87, a fine egg yolk yellow Beijing glass bottle, attributed to the Palace Workshops of the Qianlong period (1736-1795) . A delicately created example with mask handles, gently curved neck and evenly tapered body supported by a fine small foot rim.

The sale also included a number or excellent painted enamels on glass from the 18th C. including examples from the Marian Mayer collection. So browse, read and enjoy.
