Seventy Bronzes Highlight Tajan Auction June 19, 2017 | Chinese Art News

On June 19th the TAJAN auction house in Paris will conduct a sale of Asian art featuring two terrific bronzes from French estates.  

While this sale lacks any major porcelain or jade lots, the folks at Tajan have managed to wrangle up a number of nice bronzes. With estimates ranging from under one thousand to over 200,000 Euros. If you collect bronzes from China, Tibet and Japan, this is a sale worth paying attention to.

Small Bronzes From China and Tibet

The sale features a very wide range of seated and standing figures in both cast bronze as well as some heavy copper examples, some with pigments. A number of them are fairly rare forms and have "Gilt" splashes.

Gilt Lacquer Dali Kingdom (Yunnan) Bronze Buddha

Lot 99. Made during the Song dynasty (960-1279).  An extremely rare type as most from the Dali Kingdom were melted upon it's collapse.  Measuring 11 inches tall and was purchased in China prior to 1930 by a College Professor and thence by descent to the current owner who was given it upon the birth of her son in 1982.  Estimate: 100,000 to 150,000 Euros.

An Important Gilt lacquer Bronze Statue of Wenchang Wang

Lot 161. Dating to the mid to later Ming dynasty measuring 45 inches tall and coated with a deep undisturbed patina. From a private French collection.  This is a superb depiction of the Daoist diety known as the god of literature and culture, seated and dressed in finely detailed robes with his hands joined resting on a plinth. Est: 150,000 to 250,000 Euros.

Zitan Screen With Jade Figures, Qianlong Period

Lot 180. A stunning and deeply carved Zitan screen fitted with variously colored jade figures and devices in a landscape setting. This was originally a wall panel and was later made into a floor screen, probably during the 19th C.. At which time was fitted onto a well carved Hongmu stand. Est.  80,000 to 120,000 Euros.

Rare Nine Dragon Carved Lacquer Box, Qianlong  Mark and Period (1736-1795)

An extremely fine and well rounded box measuring 11 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall.  From a private French collection.  Inscribed and marked with reign mark on base. The top depicting the dragon in pursuit of the flaming pearl with eight additional dragons encircling the box.
