Fakes and bad attributions, including Catawiki once again
The flood of fake items on Catawiki, despite the opinion of their experts, some of whom well known and having a business activity (not good for their reputation), continue.
Besides the obvious horses figure with annexed TL test from an, at this point, infamous Lab, here is an example. It is already at 800 euro, with 3 lasting days to close. Fake!:
The seller will ship the item(s) within 3 working days after receiving confirmation of payment. Shipping costs are for mainland destinations only. More information Any other costs or charges such as customs or import duties, customs clearance and handling may also apply during the shipment of your lot and will be charged to you by the involved party at a later stage if applicable.
It is on Bidamount Weekly newsletter.
I think the relationship between Bidamount and both Catawiki and ebay has become a bit complicated over the past several months, with various collaborations and tie-ups and referral services. I 'm not saying in any way this has compromised Peter's expertise or impartiality, but the more extensive and regular the ties are, then the more referrals and inquiries he will get, and the more likely that fakes and suspect items will appear in the Newsletter. Just because the weeding process is probably less subject to Peter's personal attention.
I can't comment on the expertise of the Catawiki 'authenticators' , but their position is inevitably suspect given they are paid by Catawiki and indirectly by the seller. Catawiki does not make money if the experts reject too many items as probable fakes. The danger with Catawiki , viz-a-viz ebay, is that the innocent buyer assumes that vetted items are indeed real and genuine antiques.
Dear Tam, I agree with you. I believe that it is impossible for one single man to perform all this amount of job. He may use some automated search also, in fact in his Weekly newsletter of a couple of weeks ago there was the listing of a set of car toys, having the word “Ming” in the title.
Of course if I am posting a not correct items that is in the Weekly newsletter it is not for blaming him, it is just for avoiding people to buy a not correct item that escaped him. Wer say that “also the priest can err in celebrating mass”😊
Now, it is unstead not admissible for a well established dealer to make so many mistakes at Catawiki.
