Hello All

I hope that you enjoy seeing my Lingnan School Peacock scroll mounted painting.

I have not been able to find out anything about the artist, but it would appear to have been painted in the 1970's. It has been based on a well known painting by Chao Shao-an, but it is not a copy as you will see from the link below.

https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/201505/22/P201505210451_photo_1084104.htm

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Jeremy,

Appears to have a cyclical date of "wuwu" 1978 in the script.

Thank you George @gfhandel for your kind help with the date of my painting.

Thank you Mark. @imperialfinegems

I have another scroll painting by the same artist of an ape, which again I believe was inspired by a Chao Shao-an painting. I actually like the ape painting better, but my wife prefers the peacock painting due to the vibrant colours and it is hanging on our dining room wall for the time being.

Below is my ape painting, which is also in the Lingnan School style.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

I also like the one with the monkey. Makes you wonder what he is looking at. Something he lost perhaps?

@jeremy  Yes, I understand your situation. Just last night my wife was informing me of which pieces will be kept and which will be going. I may be the collector, but she's the decider.

@jeremy

Hi Jeremy -

The peacock is so ‘life’ like and the monkeys expression/body positioning captures a brief, almost ‘comical’ moment - both very nice scrolls ...

Hello Stuart @ming1449

Thank you.

The painting of the peacock is 140cm tall x 71cm wide so it is almost lifesize as well.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Nice painting!

I have something similar from 1978, but it's unsigned and no one has been able to tell me the artist.  It's life size and hung in my bedroom.  I wish there was a better source somewhere for these type of cultural revolution period pieces.  Perhaps because so much artwork came out during that time, that the task is too overwhelming.

Here's mine:

@greeno107   Along those lines, I was wondering where I can go to have an artist seal on a painting or scroll identified? It seems like there must be people out there who specialize in that. Who are they and how does one access them?

@greeno107  Or maybe there is an app where you can scan and image of the seal mark and it will match it up?

Hi greeno107,

Your scroll is very nice and it is signed (left hand side) with a read mark along with calligraphy.

If you expand (or retake photo) the image perhaps gfhandle aka George maybe able to read it for you.

Line at left reads October 1978 followed by two character artists name (you already knew the date). If you can find a native speaker you may be able to translate the name. The issue then becomes a matter of searching online for the name and may not be able to locate the artist. Remember that most scrolls you are going to find are not done by documented artists as calligraphy and painting is a popular form of hobby or enjoyment in China.

@gfhandel   That is a daunting bit of information, however my question for you would be this: what is the best or ultimate reference for identifying artists marks that are documented? Is there some great online resource for that?

@gfhandel  I have a few Chinese friends in the biz, but none have been able to confirm the artist.  I'll try and post a close up of the calligraphy, but if I remember correctly, it is signed with a pseudonym rather than a proper artist name.
