What a great thread!
I collect all sorts, and my collection of Chinese porcelain is very small and very modest - nothing special. Here’s the main group, mixed with some of my Welsh transferware.
You’ll have to play ‘spot the 3 Chinese pieces’ in this one!
I have one bronze
Thought I’d include my collection of Welsh transferware and hanpainted pottery to show how I’d like to display my Chinese porcelain when my collection has grown!
Sorry the photos are so dark - small cottage in December in Wales - I haven’t see daylight in months!
Nic
Nice collection Nic. I noticed that you have a Yuan/Ming bronze bottle vase there. Nice one.
And you have a Dachshund too. Nice. I love Dachshund. I have an American Dachshund.

Nic, nice collection of Victorian wares, I don’t see any Swansea grapes or tulip patterns in that lot? They a quite sought after items here. Also, you have a silver mount box with shell embellishments, looks Victorian is that a pin cushion or trinket box? It looks interesting.
Hi Xin,
Yes, I love the bottle vase. Following the advice from you guys I’ve been super-selective, opting to buy fewer pieces but better quality. It has a lovely patina. I have 2 dachshunds, they’re fabulous dogs! So much character - too much at times? 😉
Hi Ron, I don’t collect Swansea grapes or tulip pattern Gaudy Welsh China. Pieces are rarely marked and surprisingly very little of it was made in Wales. All the Victorian pottery you can see here was produced in my home town c. 1840-1910. The shell mount contraption you can see is a bell, the kind you used to find in the hotel check-in to call a clerk. I think it’s probably French. I found it picking a very grand house, it was so OTT I had to keep it!
Hi Vic, thanks! Yes, I think mixing things you love creates a uniquely personal display. Being surrounded by things you worked hard to obtain is very satisfying. I’ve been fancying delft recently but I’m trying to control myself. There’s a point at which collecting fully tips over into a sickness! 🤣
Nic
Dear George,
I see that you do collect old radios. It has been one of my hobbies too.
Dear Stuart, in one of the pictures of your super collection there are three yuhuchunping shaped b&w vases. The small one on the left has a brown rim and the glaze is whiter than the other two ones.
Does it have a square seal mark on the base? How are you dating it?
Regards,
Giovanni
Dear Giovanni -
Attached additional images of the yuhuchun vase, decorated with pine, butterfly and bamboo, H. 17.6 cm, MD. 5.4 cm, BD. 5.3 cm. Foot rim irregularly cut/finished, no base mark. Glaze finely crackled, moreover, an additional layer of white slip is applied beneath the underglaze blue. This was a unique practice in the private kilns of the late Ming ...
Several larger vases, H. 25.3/28.5 cm, usually decorated with pine, crane and deer, or occasionally butterflies amongst floral sprays, have been recovered from tombs dating to 1624, 1628 and 1634, so Tianqi/Chongzhen periods. One of these has a four-character square seal mark ‘yu tang jia qi’ - ‘fine vessel for the jade hall’, others carrie a signal square seal mark ‘ya’ - ‘elegant’ ...
This vase, of smaller size and differing overall composition, dates to the same period 162o/30’s, and is quite rare ...
Stuart
Dear Giovanni - lovely example of type, very well painted and so nice to have the single ‘ya’ base character!😊...
Stuart
Found this on the net while reading a blog on antique majolica.
Is’t this a great display of Qing export blue and white. If this is all real, they a small fortune tied up in porcelain. I suspect the picture has been set up for a fancy decorator magazine so maybe all the blue and white may modern.
I looked closely and have noticed many of the same patterns but all have been hand painted so slightly different. I thought I would post for those who envoy the image.
Ron
Wow what a grandiose collection. A bit hard to see all the details but very impressive I must say.
Thank you for posting it Ron.
Mark
Mark, yes it caught my eye, owning a Victorian home this would be how a lot of the porcelains would have been displayed. As far as the blue and white being period, i’m Leaning towards not. All the pieces are far to perfect and from the limited detail you can gleam, show no signs of age. Still a nice display.
