So few weeks ago I bought a vase I knew was broken and it wasn’t the cheapest after fees and shipping but I bought it anyways for my private collection because I knew it wasn’t sellable for a profit. I know in Asia broken items are taboo but in the state we are more accepting. Either way I felt a little disheartened. Have you ever bought a broken item for your collection. Here is the vase I bought it’s a rare mountain glaze dragon in clouds vase but the neck was completely broken off and repaired.
I believe over the next couple of decades rare broken pieces are going to be much more accepted and valuable. So you should feel good about your purchase. Enjoy it for several years while it appreciates in value as people come to their senses.
Hi Brian -
If the object either complements and or enhances a collection then, personally, damage has never bothered me. Such pieces present an opportunity to acquire something that, in good condition, would far exceed financial limitations ...
The scenario is altogether different if acquiring to then sell on, as restoration cost and other considerations have to be 'factored' in ...
A number of my 'best' pieces had damaged, some considerable, when acquired ...

My example of green Fitzhugh has a staple repair, but the example of enamel painting was superior and the price was right due to the repair, it displays well and the repair is not noticeable from the front. The cup I broke recently had a hairline to begin with and now it will have further repair. I don't sell it, so if my sons get anything for it at all, fine by me. The consignent shop sold a pair of Tod's driver mocasins that I wore once for 38.00, which I will use my half of that for store credit because I get an extra 10% and they do get some interesting decorating items from time to time and if they manage to sell my Greek riding boots and a pair of Ralph Lauren loafers, then I may venture through my closet for further sales, kept a pair of handcrafted Italian sandals that are orange suede from 1968 that someone looking for a halloween costume might buy. My venture into sales. 🤣
Generally writing I tend not to buy damaged or repaired stuff because buyers in China rarely buy them.
However I have purchased two items that were damaged that readers may recall.
The first is a rare Ming front facing dragon plate and a rare Yabu Meizan saki cup. I intend to fully restore these soon.
If you are buying rare pieces then I think it's OK if the damage isn't too severe. But I wouldn't buy anything that is damaged or repaired that is mediocre quality or value.
Mark
I buy and sell damaged items. Of course they are cheaper, but not everyone can afford perfect items. It makes collecting Asian more accessible and they make for good learning pieces.
On a more personal level, some of my collection are damaged not just because of the price, but because I like the added layer of history and I find it inspiring/ reassuring that though damaged, they have survived.
I don't want to look at chips and hairlines so I buy undamaged only. The great advantage is that it prevents me from buying too much and filling the place with clutter. Also I don't have problems reselling if I choose to (I am a collector not a dealer). Simple Chinese export learning pieces can be inexpensive, even in good condition. The combination of low quality and damaged comes close to trash in my eyes.
Birgit
I am with Birgit... But I still find to much stuff 😅 But in case one of the precious items has an encounter with Gravity....
You can also make a nice Kintsugi repair. I receantly repaired a Bowl, that one of my Cats broke in two... even ordered Urushi Lacquer from Japan 😉
might be an idea for your vase Brian 🤗
with Best Regards...
Carsten
