Hi Everyone,
My sister gave me her lightbox set, complete with lights and camera stand. I already have a professional light set with umbrellas but this is much better for smaller objects with it's backdrops, easier setup, etc. Any tips for me on how to use it? Here are some samples from my first try last night. I'm not happy with how dark the ginger jar photos turned out. Next time I'll try with light coming through the "ceiling".
Inch by inch, I'm getting closer to opening my online store...

Hi Steve, your pictures look very good to me. I use a light box too, usually with a neutral white or black background. The dark background takes a lot of light away and I have to brighten the pictures up more than with the white background which might be a disadvantage. But some work on photoshop is always necessary. I never know where to put the lights correctly, so I put them in an angle to the left and right of the box and let the light shine through the walls.

I forgot to say that I work with a spyder cube and take pictures in RAW format to get the white balance right. Porcelain has so many shades of white: blueish, greenish, grayish. I want to catch them exactly.

@shinigami Yes, I agree about the colors. I white balanced my camera and only take photos at night. The lights have a daylight slight bluish-white color which sets off the bluish white of the porcelain. I've learned to make sure other lights are off in the room, especially if they are yellowish.

Yes, you're right about the darker backgrounds; you have to be careful to give it some background light and illuminate the object softly. I sometimes lighten the photos up as well although I remember Peter's warning about not editing them but I think he mainly is talking about colors.
I took your suggestion & used the white background yesterday. I think they turned out!
The box works best with smaller objects; it's easier to get shallow focus and smooth out the background (I will try ironing them).
I'm sharing the photos I took yesterday of one of my favorite bowls & various things.
You can see on some of them - even after I said I was careful about turning off the other lights - that I forgot to by the amber spots of the chandelier - oops!

Out of curiosity what camera do you shoot with.... Im in the shopping around phase.
Also, even though I don't mind it perhaps bump out your F stop a bit and get a deeper plane of focus, just if you are listing these.

@steve That looks very good and is a nice bowl. One disadvantage of the white background is that it turns grayish when the object is correctly lighted and the white balance is also ok. I have that too and can live it. Professional auction house pictures have a perfect white invisible background. I think they use stronger light and often brighten up their pictures too much for my taste.
@jbeer2121 Any camera will do as long as it can take RAW format pictures for easy post processing. Some people take jpg only but I wouldn’t want to miss the possibilities of a RAW picture.

That's a really good suggestion. Thanks! Back in my youth I studied photography but have forgotten the basics in this age of automatic cameras. For artsy-fartsy shots it's nice to use a shallow field for dramatic effect but for selling items it's not so helpful.

Thanks, John! I love it too. It was one of those happy finds in an antique mall in a booth with otherwise overpriced junk. This was priced under $40 and in perfect condition. Although Canton enamels are quite common, this is a very good example. I love the detailed quality.

Yes, I could lighten up the background to bring it around to a whiter tone. I might experiment with that; I have more lights, although the grey doesn't bother me.
I used the dark blue background for this etched glass; sometimes a dark background is better, depending.
