There was an estate auction in Colorado last week that had amazing items I’m mean a million dollar estate everything was museum quality. The estate company did two things wrong. They hire an Asian so called expert and really bad photos of the items. I was a bottom finder at this auction. Due to bad photos this bronze Sukhothai Buddha sold for $60 bucks. What do you think did I hit the jackpot.

Any photos of the back and base, Brian? Also how big is it?  I like that dish behind it? 😊

@lotusblack

Very nice Shakyamuni! 15th Century in my opinion, comparing yours to this Buddha from the BKK National Museum:

@julia there is a story behind that very large charger when me and my wife first met we when to our first antique mall trip she hates antiquing. I told her what to look for. So she calls me in the mall and said I found something that looks Asian but they want to much for it. Well how much $45 dollars. I told her to bring it up and it was a 18 inch charger. Lol He is 17 inches tall they had him also listed as 12inches tall. I’ll get photos of his in the morning.

@detuned I also put him at that period they seem to have a fudge color patina from that time period. So I have been wondering about these bronzes and why they lose their gold foil this bronze and the others were all gold gilt that’s why I bided I could see a little left over gilt in one of the photos. But I’m  really curious why the gilt comes off so cleanly.

@lotusblack terrible picture from the auction itself... 🫣

The gold often disappears because many Buddhas are just leaf gilded. That is a tradition in Thailand. If you wish for something you apply a gold leaf to the Buddha and pray. Because of the rather simple application of the gold it is mostly lost rather quick or it gets taken off after some time to not have a to thick gold layer...

@lotusblack This is a great way to amass a substantial collection. I recently acquired some significant pieces from a regional auction house as well. Not only do they not know much about Asian antiques, but those collectors who do know don't trust their listing and the pictures are usually subpar so they get passed over by online participants. Congrats on your find. It's lovely.

@detuned I’m tempted to gold leaf this bronze I always wanted to try gilding a bronze out of curiosity. I know from research these bring big bucks at auction but I don’t see it being excepted with current market issues.

@lotusblack I am familiar with that temptation... Or as we say in Germany: "Two fools, same idea!"

PSX 20231020 191127

I tried leaf gilding this Tibetan medicine Buddha years ago 😂 but as you can see, it is neither really pretty nor long lasting even though I used to lacquer the bronze back then. Just as you, I was curious on how it works and if I am not too clumsy to actually get a good result...
