This bowl popped up on my feed, looked very rustic and to have some age and was pretty cheap so I purchased it. I am fairly certain it is Bizen-yaki, and some of the features are quite lovely, especially the interior and the swiping/ swirling of the clay. The potting and the way the foot is scraped out reminds me of some of the earlier Bizen dishes and bowls I have seen, I am not entirely sure, because many of the modern Bizen makers are imitating the old style, but I think this might have good age. Curious if anyone can read the lid of the Tomobako? It might hint at what it is...

Sure looks old to me. Could be Tamba yaki, very similar-looking to Bizen sometimes. Hopefully the script will yield answers.

I am pretty sure the first part of the middle column is "Bizen" but I am not positive. at first I thought maybe Tamba or even early Shigaraki, especially because of the grittiness of the foot, but the style of the potting is really reminiscent of the early Bizen dishes, like this Hidesuki platter.... although this is much bigger so the potting looks different to a degree.... but the way the middle is drawn outwards leaving the impressions of the potter certainly reminds me of it.

I hope so! It is shockingly going to be here today in a few hours, crazy that a thing ships from Japan to me in 48hours... I think it is lovely and I can't wait to see it. I will certainly get some good pics when it gets here and add them. Its one thing I love about Bizen ware, the finish is the clay itself, and the ash from firing, and the skills of the potter, no fancy glazes and no distractions, it is very simple but appears quite complex. Sadly I misplaced my early Edo Bizen-Garatsu chaire ( tea caddy) in a move a long time ago, and unfortunately it just will never be replaced.

So it arrived, and boy is it handsome. Very rustic I must say, I really like that about it. It is very hard to photograph the wear but it has definitely been used and used. I honestly cannot tell if it is more modern or has significant age, just the nature of the clay, but it has definitely been cherished. Here are a few better photographs, and some other markings on the cloth it was wrapped in, not that they are really readable.
Interesting that there are bits of quartz? bursting through the surface, I really love that. And of course I just had to make a bowl of tea, I can't decide, does the tea suit the bowl or the bowl suit the tea?

Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about them.

I always forget to post on there, I will do that tonight.
Its funny the more I look at it the more I lean to Shigaraki ware instead of Bizen, but I really am not all that good with the different clays yet, but the feldspar or quartz popping the surface really reminds me of a Shigaraki pot I saw a while back.... Its so very complicated.
I will update once I post there...
