Hi all, would appreciate your thoughts on my blue and white covered paste box. Measures 4" w x 2.5" h. Thanks for having a look!
I agree. I was certain I have seen this style before, but I couldn't remember where. So, I did a quick search this morning to try to find something similar but the only one I found was asking 300 dollars or £ and I wasn't convinced by that one either.
I felt they might be around 1960s or so but then I also saw some similar items that were clearly new as they were being shipped from China, so I don't know about that estimate anymore.
Other than what looks to be an attempt at pretending it is old, the things that struck me were that the blue looks modern and the shape seemed a bit unbalanced because the lid is more steep sided than curved? That could be the photos though.
I'm not sure about it being made to deceive. I mean, if that is the case what is it trying to look like, do we have any comps? I am more inclined to think it is just a lower quality, functional item with a little bit of age, maybe late 19th or early 20th C. John
You could be right John, I am just going on what I have seen and what I saw, but no one said it was made to deceive. People often buy things that look old because they like that look. The problem is that it falls into the hands of someone who thinks it is old and sells it as such - or someone who knows it isn't old and they try to use it to deceive.
I still think it was made to deceive. During many centuries the potter always tried to do his best with the available material. If you find something with so many black spots and rough foot rim it’s usually a fake. Trying to look vaguely Ming or Kangxi or just „somehow antique“.
