Hi, I have a vase with a poem on it and wanted to find out what it meant but I don't speak Chinese - or read it. I took a clear photo of the poem, cropped it so that it was only the poem in the image and then put that though Google image search. Google translated it and then looking at the decoration of the vase you can get a pretty accurate feel for what the words mean. Or, pop the vase down to your nearest Chinese restaurant and give someone a few dollars to translate it for you. I haven't had to try that one yet. It is nice to know what the poem is about.

ChatGPT is also good at this. I threw this in just out of curiosity, here's what it came back with. Would be interesting to hear a native speaker's take on the accuracy of this...

"Ancient porcelain does not favor the old,
The stars of past lives cleanse karmic debts.
With intention, I sweep fresh flowers,
Yet tears of Jiangnan* remain the same.
All offered within the pot."

* Jiangnan (江南) refers to a beautiful, historically poetic region south of the Yangtze River in China, often used metaphorically in classical Chinese poetry to represent nostalgia, beauty, and longing.

I also asked it would a modern English translation might sound like and here's what it produced:

Even old porcelain doesn’t cling to the past.
What’s behind us has been washed clean by time.
I clear the space and place fresh flowers.
Still, the sorrow lingers — like tears in spring.
Everything I hold is poured into this little pot.

@kaypeterson Thank you, Kay. I had not tried ChatGPT for translation of calligraphy on porcelain, but just used it for one of my pieces. The results are surprisingly good as far as I can see, although I can neither read nor speak Chinese. I will try to post the results soon.

Hello,
I am a new member. I am bilingual and am interested in Chinese classical literature and art, so I may be able to help decipher the Chinese text.

The two characters at the neck of the vase are not very clear. They are not written in any of the Chinese calligraphy styles--or poorly written. My best guess is "美香", meaning beautiful and fragrant.

The text on the body of the vase in bigger font is a couplet--a poetic form with two lines, rhyme like poems. Since the space here is not optimal for writing in two lines, they are written continuously. People, who are familiar with Chinese classical writings, will be able to understand them. They are meant to be read from top to bottom and right to left. The text is in the Running Script calligraphy.  In Regular Script, they are as follows:
古硯不容留宿墨
净瓶如意插新花

Due to email typing limitation, I wrote them from left to right. The Chinese characters here are traditional Chinese, as written on the vase.

My translation is this:
An antique inkstone does not tolerate well old leftover ink
A clean vase is ready for new flower arrangement at will

The text to the left of the couplet in smaller font typically tell the author's name and the date. Unfortunately, I can't read them. Someone, who knows more about the Running Script or Grass Script calligraphy, and familiar with traditional Chinese chronology, may be able to decipher them.

Some interesting things: I entered the couplet in Chinese into Google translate. The translation from traditional Chinese is way better than from simplified Chinese. I also entered the couplet into Google search. Multiple similar couplets exist. People changed a couple of characters here an there to make it their own while preserving the rhyme and structure of the couplet form.

Enjoy!

Zoe
