Hi Everyone!

I found a nice looking model of a Granary on Ebay it has a intriguing monkey handle, overall an odd look...

I also sat down and made some nice pictures. Would like to hear your thoughts!

@sharonp I am sure it is Qingbai not Longquan... it has a nice blue color and as you can see from the chip on the foot rim a nice white paste 🤔 I think it could be late Song Dynasty 🤷 but I can't find a granary model with such a lid for comparison... 🙉

@detuned Looks pretty legit to me. I imagine there are a lot of decorative variations.

@detuned

I was actually looking at this one also. I really don't know how I feel about it.  On one hand there really is no standard design on these, but the curled roof tiles seemed a bit exaggerated to me, the wear and staining looked like a lot of the "faked" qingbai that I see popping up, but I feel like it could trick me half the time, so I am just overly suspicious... lol.  That said I did like the monkey and the glaze sure looks lovely.  I just passed on it because it just didn't look right, but I know I know just enough to be wrong.

Its a handsome thing though, and nice pictures.

Cheers,

Jeremy

@jbeer2121 😂 So you have been keeping my prices high when bidding 🤨

Just kidding...

I thought it would be a good piece. I had several nice Qingbai ceramics and this one, I couldn't resist 🤷 And it's not green! So my wife doesn't roll her eyes at me 😂

This Qingbai Camel I sold a couple of years ago had the same glaze...

@detuned

Don't worry, I'm usually spending my money(naively) on broken and beat up, unidentifiable pottery.  lol.

luckily I have no one to judge me but myself. hehe

wonderful camel!

@jbeer2121

the camel was a real win, bought it for around 170€ and sold it for an additional 0.

My wife by the way loves pre-columbian stuff but due to the international regulations I stoped handling these 🤷

with Best Regards...

@detuned speaking of pre-Columbian, maybe you can tell me if that's what this is and if your wife would like to own it?

@johnshoe

Moche, Peru. a kind of figural vessel. The form of the eyes often give away the origin of pre-columbian pottery most of the time...

My wife says thanks! but no, thanks 😂

 😅 it's not Mayan or Olmec, she is after that right now 🙄

While Googling Quinbai and celadon, saw Robert McPherson page has an example of a Quinbai monkey. Another page said the paste is grayer on celadon, but another said celadon comes in several different shades, some bluish green and that all kilns produced quinbai, so Jingngugian but also Longquan, which was in existence in the 900s CE. Yet another said the terms qinbai and celadon are interchanged sometimes, like everything else, more questions than answers when it comes to ceramics.  It made for a fun evening, see that McPherson monkey figure, color looked similar to me and it was his Qinbai monkey figure example in the article, just Google the difference between Quibai and celadon for some happy reading. I could not read everything because I refuse to deal with cookies, unless they are shortbread or oatmeal raisin.

@sharonp Jeremy simplified the main difference for me recently. Qingbai has white paste while longquan is grey. This was helpful because the glaze tones for each type vary widely and can resemble each other which is sometimes confusing. So per usual, the answers are to be found on the unglazed feet.  John
