I won this in local auction and I hope I didn’t over pay. I just don’t have any experience with Chinese export to America. I know since I have no know in this field it could be a expensive copy. Does anyone have experience and if authentic a value. Thanks for your help.
When John Guerrero gets resettled in Dallas, hopefully he will be able to check it out (if they don't work him to death). I tried Google but could not find an example of a clipper ship with rigging like your example, the ones I found had the sails unfurled.
This is an interesting one. At first glance it looked impressive. After looking more closely there are aspects I have questions about. The spears seem a little fat. The red and orange looks a bit watery in places. Some of the design elements are amazing looking at a distance but when zoomed in on seem a bit simplistically rendered. With that said, these export pieces were done in various qualities so maybe that would explain what I'm seeing. Either that or it's a more recent copy. At any rate it's attractive regardless.
@johnshoe I had the same reaction I was unsure because I felt it was stiff. I was like do I want to walk away from a good piece. I have had it looked at by one of my contacts he said American export wares are very rare and in the early time after the revolution. These came to American at the late Qinglong reign and continued to around 1840 he said mine is 1790 do to the platter shape and orange peal texture. He said it’s a nice example and in excellent condition he appraised it at $3000 I paid $150 I still want more opinions because you know everyone has a different view.
One other thing I forgot to mention is these were revived in the late Qing to early 20th century. But I haven’t seen one. This is going to be a tricky piece.

Not my area but in my opinion it's Qianlong..
The later pieces were less defined... Especially the border. Tended to be more dots or similar without the other as seen on your example.
Not 100% sure but this could even be Yongzheng /Qianlong period.
I would definitely ask Peter about this one.

@imperialfinegems thanks Mark it’s an American clipper I was told definitely Qianlong and extremely rare American export. If authentic I’m thinking a major will except it if as rare as mentioned someone also mentioned might be early Fitzhugh.
In my opinion it's definitely genuine. Not I am not an expert on these. The quality is extremely good.
I have seen Peter talk about these many times and discusses the difference between them.
I think one of the the majors will probably accept it.
Hopefully others will chim on with their thoughts. I recall we have one member who may be able to tell us a lot about yours.

@imperialfinegems Mark I picked up a Jade necklace at same auction I’m at a lost I’m not sure what to do with it because I’m not really sure what it is. Would you mind giving me an opinion?
@imperialfinegems thanks so I not sure if jade or another stone. But it’s a big necklace the gold wrapped thread is falling apart I’m also thinking does it need retreading. It was cheap so if not anything I’m only out $75 bucks. Oh it will not scratch.

Unfortunately imo it is not jade. But bloodstone necklace. Not the red flecks.

Is there any evidence of wear to the top surface, knife marks, scratches, small chips? These were bought to be used. This reminds me a bit of that ‘to good to be true’ hunt bowl. Everything is there to excite the rabid collector of American export ware.
