Hi Al -
You may find part of this article of interest, published in Orientations, October 1996, Vol 27, No 9, pages 67/78 by Ronald W Longsdorf ...
Stuart
Hi Al -
This may also be of interest for reference, included within 2005 publication of broken/damaged pieces within the Gugong, Palace Museum, Beijing, 2 Volumes ...
Stuart
Hello Guys.
By “handling” it , does it mean it needs to be “not to heavy” in terms of weight ?
The reason that got me interested in this piece is that I know that the Chinese character is hand written.
if it is heavily faked, I also have not seen this type of bowl before until my friend showed me there is one similar to Palace Museum…
my question is is the value fair 1500 gbp ? I can still have a chance to back out if I can confirm it is not mark and period…
Is Peter well now ? Hope he is, I love watching his video !
any link or reference of Guangxu or Tongzhi bowl would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys ..
Alex
My advice to you is too purchase this bowl for said price if not cheaper.
I have consulted with a few people who all agree it's tongzhi marked and period and highly probable to be imperial.
I would, however, ask Peter if your still unsure. But secure it before someone else buys it. As these are rare and highly sought after.
But they are being copied today. But imo and others it is not a fake.
If you wanted to buy another one you would have to pay in excess of £3500.
Ensure that it is without damage or repair as this will impact the price.
Mark
Hi Mark.
I am absolutely overwhelmed by the passion and contribution of you and everyone. I will secure this and it will take time for me to absorb all these reading. I realised that there is so much academic learning we need to spend time on as much as we like to keep collecting.
There is always that feeling involve when purchasing something and I will start reading up books as well so I can share to people who find themselves in the same situations…
thank you and will let you know what Peter says …
Al
Hello guys,
I just got a word from Peter and he said that it is beautifully made but unfortunately it is a modern copy.
1.) no sign of wear in the bowl as this type of gilding is very susceptible to wearing
2.) the footrim is not right as this would have been made to imitate imperial. The foot room is supposed to be much better than this.
3.) even at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, he would doubt it as the piece is too good to be true.
So it looks like I would need to retract my purchase. Purchased from a UK based Auction House.
I hope I have the rights to retract my winning bid if I can prove that the Mark and “possibly” period is proven otherwise.
Thanks and looking for any further opinion… or we close this sad sad case…. But important lesson for me.
Al
hello. It is UK based Auction house.
unfortunately, it is a modern copy according to Peter.
Al
@superox This has been an educational thread. Thanks for sharing the experience with us. John
Hi Brigit,
It was done so properly and I know that if I buy it I could probably sell it at a higher price for unsuspecting buyer. But, I want to share this to everyone and to make sure that product like this is taken out of the market!! We all have our fair share of this experience of paying for something that is not what is advertised and I am so ever grateful to Peter Combs for creating this community for us (Peter is like our Assange of Chinese Ceramics!)
I told the seller of my concern and they accepted it.
In meantime, thanks every one (Mark - its too good right ? thats why its called a marriage bowl (no puns intended!)) for all the contribution and to create the awareness for everyone.
Thank you and good night...
Al
Hi Al and others,
This has been a very interesting discussion on this marriage bowl.
This bowl I think would need to be handled in person to verify whether or not it is genuine.
The mark is perfect as is the glaze. The gilt is worn in appropriate places and has natural age to said gilt.
I did find this bowl at Lyon and Turnbull and viewed the images in HD.
I believe it is still a genuine example and highly probable to be from said period or perhaps a little bit later.
At the time of wedding there were in excess of 7000 pieces made of various designs etc. This was a turbulent time and a number of the leading kilnsman had departed the imperial kilns. Perhaps this is from a non-imperial kiln in the form as a attribute of sorts?
The footrim on the example is not imo consistent with other known imperial wares from the period. However, It could be a attribute ftom the guangxu period.
I do not believe that it is a a fake.
I have asked for a couple of opinions from some former and present associates of mine from both Christies and Sotheby's.
If they respond I shall indeed share opinions
Mark
