Good evening.

I happen to have bought this marriage bowl and would like to know if it is Mark and period.

It is supposed to be a gift to my wife... so i want to make sure that it is of mark and period and if its not please advice when this would have been made.

I am learning a lot from the calligraphy and how to spot it.

looking forward to your advice.

thank you in advance ....

Alex

@superox,

Hi AL,

A beautiful bowl.

In my opinion it's highly probable to be M&P. It's tongzhi marked. 1861-1875.

@imperialfinegems

Hi Mark. Thank you.  is it common to have a 4 letter mark during the period ?

Does the calligraphy tell a lot whether this is a copy or not or its age (based on the stroke and density ?)

Would this be considered an imperial quality or a good minyao copy ?

A similar copy of this is in a palace museum so I dont want to think that this is a clever fake.

looking forward to more feedback and opinion.

Thanks so much

Alex

@superox,

Hi AL,

I am not an expert on these types of wares.

The mark is consistent with known examples. The footrim appears to be slightly rough. This is also consistent with period porcelain that was rectified in the guangxu period.

I think it's a a fine example. But I don't know if it's imperial quality or not. It would need to be handled.

Perhaps others may offer their opinions etc.

Personally I would ask Peter.

Mark

PS : here is a a marriage bowl sold by Christies a few years ago. Listed as imperial.

To me it looks good for very good quality Guangxu. But there are so many good fakes today I can’t say anything definite without touching and handling it. You might use Peters identification service.

@superox

Hi Alex -

Such wares are really not my area at all but, based on the images, it looks very good quality and could possibly be a mark/period example ...

However, I would concur with Mark @imperialfinejems and Birgit @shinigami comments, such pieces are heavily faked and it would need to be seen/handled to confirm ...

Hello Guys.

By “handling” it , does it mean it needs to be “not to heavy” in terms of weight ?

The reason that got me interested in this piece is that I know that the Chinese character is hand written.

if it is heavily faked, I also have not seen this type of bowl before until my friend showed me there is one similar to Palace Museum…

my question is is the value fair 1500 gbp ? I can still have a chance to back out if I can confirm it is not mark and period…

Is Peter well now ? Hope he is, I love watching his video !

any link or reference of Guangxu or Tongzhi bowl would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys ..

Alex

@shinigami

Hi Brigit.

I just sent an email to Peter.

Lets hope for a good prognosis.

It looked really good for me and I am not someone who would expect (or want) this to be the missing stolen imperial piece..

I will let everyone know..

thanks again for this wonderful website!

Al

You have received the opinions of Mark, Birgit and Stuart, I have nothing to add, other than your wife is getting a beautiful bowl. I presume the bowl was expensive, if by some happy circumstance it was not expensive, then you had the luck of the Irish, like winning the sweepstakes. Sharon

@superox I was reading about Cixi and Puyi yesterday and read that the eunuchs regularly pilferred treasures from the palace and sold them on the black market and that when suspicious Puyi ordered an inventory of treasures, the warehouse mysteriously burned down. I can't say that I would judge the eunuchs too harshly for seeking monetary compensation, in that no law could make them whole.

@superox I'm very curious to hear what Peter thinks of it. Was this an ebay purchase or did you get it from elsewhere?

@superox

Beautiful bowl and based on the photo due to neat calligraphy for the mark and over all quality your bowl may or may not be M&P  but it seems to be Guangxu or earlier, certainly pre-Republic Period. Please do let us know what Peter has to say.

George
