Hi Short Dong, I got confused and didn't realise they were all from the same seller.
The most interesting to me was that qianlong charger which was very beautiful, and very cheap, in the end! A great display item, and very good decoration. Someone got a great bargain . Standard postage in the UK was £12 so I don't think that's unreasonable for such a big item. Sending to Ireland of course may add an extra amount. I live in China so I hardly ever buy on ebay because of the high postage cost (and possibility of damage or loss in transit). I have sent boxes of stuff to myself from the UK to China, and they get thrown around in transit and things get broken.
I have a friend here who regularly buys stuff online from auction houses in the US and UK, and he can spend hundreds of pounds on courier service and postage. He obviously thinks it's worth it, but he does not buy cheap, damaged things. US postage costs are crazy now.
The two plates you showed also had nice decoration in a C18th style and as Xin said they look like C19th export - £92 was a bit steep perhaps, but the subject matter is not so common on export pieces .
One of the qianlong blue and white tankards with the crack across the base was also very nice , and £11 is another bargain , but it shows you how much damage can affect prices. The seller probably got estimates for repairs and restoration and decided it just wasn't worth the risk and investment. I suspect good restoration is very hard to do, and often the client will not be satisfied so it's difficult . You do see lots of bad restoration.
Hi Tam,
Yes, I asked the seller and she said she did have a friend that was to do the restoration but the restoration person was not able or did not feel it was worth it on some of the pieces. That was why she sold everything.
I ship to the north of Ireland so the postage is the same price, then for a 3 pounds 50 pence get it shipped down south. The cost of postage to Ireland would be astronomical.
So do have this self imposed tax, however i can ship anything of any size down for £3.50 no restrictions. I had thought you were in Scotland so that auction might have suited you.
The Famille rose isn't sold yet. Which is what I am watching .
It was a big charger but i was not 100% certain of it, and i have do some willow pattern plates, large one's already. I have a few other items, and the postage for uk was £12 which is alot and while it went for £1 it may have cost another few pounds to break that. In the end it could cost £18 and there are other items on my list.
It is illogical when a Qianlong Charger for £1 can become too expensive but that is the postal structure.
This would be a good dish right here and in good condition.
Hi Short dong,
If I walked into an antique shop and saw that qianlong blue and white charger for £13 I would snap it up, no question , so I think you have to factor in the postage into the total cost. Undamaged it could easily retail at £300 or more. It's unusually large. Small dishes of this pattern can go for £30 -£50 or more if in good condition.
The famille rose export platter is nice but some of the colours look faded (in some photos) and the porcelain ground (seen on the base ) is very blue-ish, rather than white. These thickly potted items often has a blue tinge but this seems very strong , making it slightly less attractive. maybe the photo of the base is not well colour-balanced (?). Again it's a very good size, with a nicely painted scene. There seems to be a model castle on the table , which is fun.
£53 seems very reasonable , but it will probably go higher than £100.
tam
That charger is really nice, I love the decoration! You have good eye for nice items on ebay Short Dong! Very nice find and the price will be high. Yesterday I tried to bid a bit on those Kangxi plates you have also posted here, as I really liked them, I have a good restorer back in Poland, cheap and good, and those plates had only some typical fritting, but I was bitten at the end 🙁 That was a good buy, good investment for the future for a winner. Keep posting mate 🙂
