My family inherited this box. What period is this box from?

And in general, who can say anything about this box?

Thank you all in advance for your help

Sincerely, Svetlana

I found a couple of pumpkin boxes...one was sold for 700 euros. But to me it doesn’t seem like cinnabar at all, a casting...judging by the caverns and “carvings”.

A lot of fakes.

The first is positioned as the 19th century, the second is the republican period..

I found mention of cinnabar products in the form of pumpkins, but I never came across dynasty items.

When did this form begin..?

I don't know. All the ones I have seen appear to be fairly recent. When did your family inherit yours?

@julia

I can’t say the exact year, because everyone remembers it differently. But the border is 1915-1925. A relative was an archaeologist and during this period they carried out excavations in Kazakhstan on the border with China. Then this box was brought and a small seal was found with it. The seal was precisely found during excavations. We also have the stamp somewhere. Thank you in advance.

That sounds interesting.  Most of the boxes I have seen of this shape seem to be 20th c, some early Republic, others vintage copies.  All I know is that that the really old pieces of cinnabar were made in layers and using a magnifying glass, you can see the layers where the cinnabar has been carved.

There are some interesting threads on this site with information about identifying the age of cinnabar items.  I have posted one below in case that helps.  Sorry I can't be of any great use, but we do have some members who know a lot more than me and hopefully one of them may look in.

If not, I would suggest sending an evaluation request to Peter; I think it is $ 15.

@julia

thank you for your answer.

Yes, 99% of the sites are fakes and not even cinnabar. All modern items. I have only seen one box that is truly from the republican period. I think she was in the museum.

But it’s interesting that before the republic there were such pumpkin-shaped boxes? Where and when did the first pumpkin-shaped boxes come from?

We have 100% cinnabar, there are also small chips... it was cleaned of dirt several years ago. The carving and quality shows the difference from other boxes. On our box, even the pumpkin tail seems to be made as a separate element..

very sad (just now I was talking about this box with a relative. I didn’t even know this. It turns out there was another box!! It turns out there was a couple of them!! But one was sold back in the USSR! It’s a shame that they separated the couple! It would be better if I didn't find out. It turns out there is another identical box somewhere now

@cherdak Here's a link to Christie's where I just typed in "lobed cinnabar box" and this is what turned up. If you scroll through you will see both Qing and Ming examples.

@johnshoe

Thanks for the answer. It's not the same...yes, the shape is similar...but it's different...I mean exactly when they started making these stylized as a pumpkin with a tail. I think they were in the Qing Dynasty, but I haven’t seen them. Maybe earlier. I searched for a long time, but didn't find anything. I think our box may be the border of the republic and Qing...maybe Qing..

I found the seal I was talking about. I photographed it in detail from all sides and made a print. I don't know anything about this seal...
