Good afternoon and I hope all is well. I just got this bowl at a thrift store that it was donated to and I am hoping someone will be able to help me with the mark, the age and what kind of bowl it is.  Sorry that I couldn't get a better pic of the marking. Thank you all in advance for your responses and stay safe.

Hi Carol,

It looks fairly recent, quite attractive in its way but if I hadn't seen the mark, I am not sure I would think it was Asian. It looks more Japanese than Chinese.

Sorry I really don't know.  I haven't seen the style before either - it isn't a bed pan of some kind, is it? How big is it?

Julia

@julia  Good question, is it small like a water dropper?  I looked for the mark too, but struck out.

@julia Thank you for responding! it is 8" in diameter and 3 1/4" high. Bed pan? lol I would have to empty it every time it's used, but then again you never know.

Odd looking bowl.

It looks recent and although in the Japanese styling I believe it is Chinese.

@ezeeepass I had a sweetmeat dish evaluated by Peter and I remember him saying the four characters within the double frame mark came into common use in late 20th century. I can't get to my home computer at the moment to look at my blue mark, but I will take a look at it, my piece was post eighties. Sharon

@ezeeepass,

Hi Carol,

I believe it's a scholars brush washer bowl.

However it's a little unusual with the spout etc. Actually makes a lot of sense.

I did try and find the mark in my Gerald Davison book on marks to no avail. I only just received said book today. So I am still navigating and  learning how to use it.

Based on the images, I still believe it to be a modern interpretation. Especially with the spout.  This is despite your friend thinking it was either a very old piece or had old style writing.

It's very common for artists to put much earlier marks on their wares.

The way the glaze is. The depiction and way the figures/other are portrayed suggests to me that it's a recently made attribution.

Still its a very nice piece. I hope you will enjoy it.

 The only similarity I see is the double frame, it mark itself is different. I like the dark blue color on your piece. Sharon

@exeeepass @Julia @imperialfinegems

Hi Carol, Julia, Mark and all -

Attached images/descriptions for comparison:-

This shape is known as ‘Yi’ vessel, very popular during the Yuan dynasty when examples with designs in underglazed blue, underglazed red, celadon (plain and with ‘russet’ splashes’) and monochrome blue with gilt decoration were produced, although the latter type are extremely rare ...

Your piece is based on these Yuan precursors ...

Apologies, I can not help with the mark either, but concur with Julia and Mark, this is fairly modern and, as Mark has proposed, possibly Chinese painted in a Japanese style ...

Still a nice piece ...

Stuart

An interpretation of a archaic wine mixer.

I never would have made the association. I have seen these wine tasters before but not Chinese nor archaic ones etc. Made from silver that the tasters where around their necks.

I believe also coffee tasters also used something similar.

Thank Stuart, learnt something new today.

Mark
