I hope someone replies to your post as I am also very interested to know how old this bowl is and what the base mark means.
To my eyes it's an honest, provincial bowl that looks to be 17/18th Century... but what I'm quickly learning is that 'my eyes' are not at all focused ?
...let's wait and see!
I would be happy purchasing this little bowle as a piece provincial Ming. How far along the Ming time line I don’t have the knowledge to say.

in my opinion this lovely bowl is not from China. To me the footrim looks too high and the mark is also strange. Maybe an old Japanese piece?

I am also interested in the simple heap and piled effect and the mark because it is unusual ( doesn't look like characters )
Charlie, I have one almost exactly like yours. Purchased from a reprable Asian art dealer. Represented as Ming. It certainly has every thing I would be looking for to be the real deal.

Thats is a nice looking cup, and indeed has a lot of similarities with the one i have.
I have to read a bit more and perhaps have an appraiser look at the item, may i ask in what price range these cups fall?

Dear Ron and Charlie,
in my opinion you have two cups of the same design and about the same age, but one is from Japan and one from China. There are slight differences in the form and also there are the marks. It is very interesting to see them both together. The Japanese copied Chinese articles for the export market in 17th century. It would be great to hear some of the experts here about this because I am also more or less a beginner.

sorry, I have been googling for a while but didn't find a matching piece. Your cup just has a distinctive Japanese flavour to me while Ron's is clearly Chinese. Let's wait for the experts to wake up in their part of the world, maybe someone can tell us more.

Yes, this is most interesting. I wonder, on researching Chinese Imari ware I found some history of English traders being banned from trade with China for a while. I believe mid 1700’s. The only company dealing exclusively with China were the Dutch (VOC). English traders started to get thier imari from Japan. A ban is a ban, no reasone to think blue and white would not be included.
My date might be a little off.
Ops, got the countries backwards. Sorry. Re researched the English ban on trade. It was Japan they were bared from in 1639. Only the VOC were allowed to trade with Japan. Sorry for the confusion on my part.
Hello Charlie, I being looking for your marks all morning could not find marks .need beder pictures of marks the foot rim look like 17th century ones I'm look at that has mark like Rona.
