I'm curious what others think of this foot and base of a small bottle vase? If this picture was all you had to go on, what might you say about this object in terms of possible age, origin, and quality, etc. ? Thanks! John
My guess is nineteen-fifties Made in Japan, now that said, there is a better chance to see a nice thing at the end of the game or maybe not. Sharon
@johnshoe Does that rim look sugary or is that the light, good photo by the way, did you use your phone? That's a strong yellow, I'm revising my guess to nineteen-seventies Made in Japan. Is it naughty? Sharon
@sharonp Actually it's not my photo, someone else took it. Basically, if you ever find yourself thinking, "gee, John took a much better photo this time around", you can pretty much rest assured someone else took it. Not sure what you mean by naughty, unless you are asking if the vase is pornographic. If so then the answer would be no. Well, it does have flowers on it, and I suppose those could be symbolic of certain things....
@johnshoe Good to know, no crackle on the second one but the rim of the base looks somewhat sugary or once again it is the light, the mark looks interesting but it appears to have the remains of an oval blue Japan sticker, so I'll stick to the seventies. Now I'll go look at some Japanese marks. Is it Koma Tadashi mark? I'm getting vertigo looking at it sideways.
@johnshoe That one is suspiciously dirty. I suppose it is a true that you have to consider all aspects before judging a piece. The last one shows a little more but I'm not sure whether it is painted or printed and I am still not sure if the first one is Asian. Everyone else must be busy living and enjoying summer activities.
P.S. I'm going to watch Peter's video on bases again. It dropped March 4, 2020, but it covers Chinese bases.
@sharonp Okay, I now have it in my possession. Here it is:
It is 3.5 inches tall. The design was coated in gilt, but it seems to have wore off in a weird way. The odd thing is that when you turn it the gilt will still shine over the entire design, but only in one little spot at a time as you turn it because it has to be in just the right light to illuminate. I have no idea of its age or desirability, but I think it's lovely.
@johnshoe It looks almost chartreuse (could be the light), it is pretty, but my guess is still mid-century Japanese, a pleasing form. I hope someone will know, some old forms look very modern in design, like those Cong vases. Sharon
@sharonp No you are correct about the color, it's not just because of the light. I am most curious about the wear to the gilt that has caused that color to exist, and if that sort of effect could have taken more time to create than the timeline you mentioned? It's is hard to capture in photo or explain the effect, but it seems very antique, especially when viewed under magnification. I'm also curious about the gilt on yellow combo and if that is a thing. The colors would kind of blend, so it seems like a weird combo. I'm trying to imagine what it would have looked like when new.
@sharonp This piece has a similar color combo, although I'm not sure if it is an entirely accurate comparrison. https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2003/important-americana-n07865/lot.324.html
Not sure about this John, but is it earthenware? My feeling is it is Japanese of some loosely "satsuma" type - first half of the 20th c? That is quite vague (sorry) but it is hard to tell from the photos and whereas I see something 1940s in the style, it also reminds me of some Satsuma miniatures that I had that were probably 1900 - 1920.
The Sotheby's item is lovely but far higher quality and not an accurate comparison as you say - yours is a pretty item, nonetheless.
