Hello all,
I recently acquired this rather unusual goblet, and its odd shape has me baffled.
The craftsmanship is quite remarkable, particularly the finial on the cover. Peter believes it’s an authentic work by Namikawa Yasuyuki, but another friend, who is an expert in Japanese antiques, suspects it might be a copy.
What do you all think?
This is a very nice piece of cloissone.
But is it done by this master or perhaps from his workshop/student?
Firstly I am not an expert on his works.
The overall piece looks very busy which is a little bit unusual for his works.
The signed plate with its characters looks different from known works sold at Bonham's, Christies and Sotheby's.

My thoughts are that this is probably not made by the master but from his student or a attribute after his death.
This would need to be investigated further in order to obtain a confirmation either way.

@imperialfinegems Thank you Mark. The plaque is a bit atypical but there are a few oddball examples from known auction houses. I do agree that the artwork is very busy for Namikawa's works.
It would be a great find if it is genuine.
His marks did I believe slightly differ from piece to piece and his time period.
But I have never seen one by him that was so busy and of this form/type.

Where did you find it?
I don't think this is by Yasuyuki. It's lacks the elegance of his work. Nor do I think it is by his students. But I am curious to hear what others think, and perhaps I'm wrong. As for the suggestion to ask Steve Sly, I actually just emailed him today with a question about a piece of mine and he was very responsive. I also noticed he currently has some Yasuyuki works for sale on his website. If you ask him please let us know what he says. John
This is not Yasuyuki the quality is not there at all the items rendering is very forced. As for a student always possible but would be very difficult to prove. The artist of your piece was very talented and takes great skill to achieve this level but it’s not the quality of a masterpiece or has it the signs of a masters hands.
That golden dragon looks pretty good to me.
Thank you all! It’s unfortunate that the goblet is unlikely to be a genuine piece by Namikawa. However, the piece appears to have some age and the craftsmanship is quite excellent, which leaves me curious about the artisan behind this piece.

As Brian stated, the jar was sold at ahers and ogletree before. The description of that auction stated that it was unmarked. Back then I bid on it and unfortunately did not get it. When it was offered at Plakas I wondered that it had a namikawa mark and had the suspicion, that the plaque was added in between auctions.
I emailed Plakas prior to the auction and expressed my concerns. They obviously did not change the listing anyways.
@imperialfinegems Mark, How many examples of this pattern is reasonable in the secondary market, this is confusing, the ones sold made 1,000 or more, were those two the same or different examples 🤔 ❓️
