Dear friends,
You may also see this Ding dish on eBay. It's a nice dish and of the period - Song dynasty. But not from Ding kiln of Hebei in Northern China. It's a copy from Hutian Kiln 湖田窑 of Jingdezhen at the Song period. It's called Southern Ding ware. I talked to William Chak from Hongkong, a very recognized collector and dealer. He told me about different Ding copies from different regions at Song time. This one here is a very successful copy.

Xin

Hello Xin
Do examples of Southern Ding Ware also have the 'teardrops' in the glaze? Are these pieces characterised by an unglazed rim or is it the shape?
Kind regards,
Jeremy
The Southern Ding ware from Jingdezhen doesn't have 'teardrops' generally. The recipe of the glaze is different. The body is whiter and finer than Hebei Ding ware and more transparent. Many have greenish tone in the glaze. There are also pieces with similar ivory glaze. Unglazed rim is typical for Ding ware, so many other kilns who copied Ding kiln also used the same method, of course the shape is copied too.
The one from chamberlain is a good example.

Xin

Hello Xin
Thank you for your reply. I have seem to term, but I have struggled to find examples online.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
It's a very special area. You may find those things often in mainland China. I have handled very little of them in Europe.

Hello Xin
For a beginner like myself it is a very confusing area. Sometime ago I asked for help regarding my Song twin fish bowl as it has a greyish glaze and having seen the term Southern Song Ding Ware I had wondered if it was a piece of this type of ceramic ware.
It was the consensus that it is a piece of Qingbai Ware and subsequently I found a similar bowl in the British Museum collection, albeit that this bowl has a very blueish glaze more common of Qingbai Ware.
https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/A_1929-0722-2
Interestingly they show this bowl next to a Northern Song Ding bowl and state that the Qingbai bowl was most likely an imitation of the Ding Ware.
With Song dynasty Qingbai Ware also imitating Ding Ware, it becomes even more difficult to differentiate.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
I guess your bowl is an early Qingbai (grayish white) ware from Hutian kiln, northern Song dynasty. The glaze recipe or kiln condition wasn't as good as Qingbai ware of southern Song. It looks grayish blue/white on these photos which is typical for this time. The body is very white. The fish pattern is not very clear. This was very usual. At that time the quality is not always the same.
Just my opinion according to your photos.
Best regards,
Xin

Hello Xin
Thank you for this information.
I had assumed that it was from Jingdezhen, but you are correct that the glaze is a greyish-blue shade and not the ice blue pooling which is more typical. I have a small small brush washer that has the ice blue glaze and so that was why I wasn't sure about this twin fish bowl.
I am happy if it is from the Hutian kiln as I have my Song brush washer from Jingdezhen and I have also have a Yuan dynasty 'Marco Polo ware' Qingbai plate from the Dehua kilns. I am trying to build up my collection to include as many examples from the different kilns.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
I guess that I am mixing up the different kilns and was thinking of a different location for the Hutian kiln!
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Below is a photograph of the underside of my small Qingbai brush washer. It has a very subtle ice blue pooling in the corners.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Yes, this one is a typical Qingbai ware from Southern Song dynasty Hutian kiln in Jingdezhen.

Hi Xin,
Can I ask for your opinion on this bowl? Todd
take it with a grain of salt
@Watership, I wonder if your plate could be Korean Choson period buncheong ware of the 15th - 16th century. Try to search for it and see if you can find some comparable examples.
Hi Xin,
Can I ask for your opinion on this bowl? Todd
About this one, sorry, I have no idea.

Hi Xin, ok thank you for taking a look, my friend.
Hi Avatar, I did some searching as you suggested, and it does seem like a possibility. I was able to find similar pieces, although nothing definitive. If Giovanni and Xin are both not sure, I think it’s likely not Chinese. The Japanese seem not to have produced this style. So, that leaves Korea. Although I think that’s about as far as I will be able to take it.
