By the way dear Corey, why do you call those vases soft paste?
Giovanni
Because soft paste is the term for this kind of ware as it is also noted is description of this soft paste vase that have a similar archaistic design as my celadon at Sotheby's (I messed up the links again and posted the Lauritz.com link twice.)

Speaking of yaozhao, this bowl was sold for a bargain from the same dealer as I bought the Xuande dragon jar from.
I had actually planned to buy it, but forgot about it. Can you guys tell me if it is also fake? It''s ceratinly very well made if that's the case .
Dear Corey,
soft paste is the type of porcelain, it is referred to the type of body’s paste; it is not related to the design or the shape of the vase.
Giovanni
One of the things that I constantly try and tell myself is that the reproduction industry wouldn't make any serious money if their products didn't look like the real thing. Can't think that anyone (excluding Rich here) would buy a fake designer hand bag if it was a totally different shape to the original, the logos were drawn differently, they had 4 handles instead of one, the zips were a completely different colour. You can't trust the logic that "it looks like the real thing". It's supposed to look like the real thing.
With regards to the Japanese seller: without analysing every item in detail I can't claim they all are reproductions, but the ones I opened and studied the photos of were all reproductions. I was thinking to myself.... how could a seller who photographs things clearly, describes them properly, offers international shipping, has his listings in English, has good feedback etc. etc. offer genuine antiques on auction at bargain prices and only one person out of the thousands of people in the world hunting for Chinese porcelain has noticed? It doesn't happen. It's "what does everyone know that I don't?". Not "what do I know that no one else does?". Except when you really do unearth a gem ?
James
Logic and wise words dear James.

Just adding a small followup to this old thread. Did you see the two Xuande style blue and white pieces dated to the 19th/20th century that was sold at Rob Michiels Auctions not so long ago? Especially this Xuande marked flask looked interesting in my eyes as it had strong signs of a possible earlier dating.
But also the oblong box looked interesting, and could also possibly have a much earlier date of manufacture.
Peter Combs talks about the box in the video where he comments on the sale and mentions a Malaysian Collector who believed it was likely a real Xuande mark and period, but due to the condition issue he was not himself overwhelmingly interested.
And I thought the box was just another fake because I had seen a fake version posted in another forum, But I later learned there is also a similar box in Aurora Museum. And (to me) even more interesting there is also a flask similar Xuande flask in the hat museum thet is decorated in a style that is much closer to the Rob Michiels flask than the one at British Museum.
http://www.auroramuseum.cn/en/aurora/cultural/cultural3.html
(these two pieces can only be seen at two different websites)
I think it's very interesting not only that these two pieces resides in the same museum but that two very similar pieces turn up in a european auction house side by side. I'll not go as far as saying that they are the counterparts, but I sinceresly belive the Rob Michiels pece could be authentic Xuande mark and period, and if that's the case then they were certainly sold off for a bargain compared two their potential full value. And the moonflask could probably fetch a million dollar sale price on a good day at Sotheby's even in that horrible condition. Compare the Yongle moonflask thet was one of the unsold premium lots of the Meiyintang Collection that failed to sell at Sotheby's because bidders felt the reserve price was set too high when hold against the condition. That one had the neck part entirely rebuild.

Here is the thread where we had a short talk about the flask at Rob Michiels Auctions.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
The Museum’s collections of Asian art span nearly five millennia and encompass the cultures of China, the Himalayas, India, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
