Song To Yuan Dynasty Ceramics and Pottery
Below is a selection of 11th to 14th C. Chinese ceramics covering the Song to the Yuan period and represent a fairly good cross section of the types found in the market today, with a few rarer examples for comparison. pay close attention to the small details such as the foot-rims and textures of the glazes.
From the Northern Song to Yuan dynasty ceramics were made continuously with only slight differences in color and paste and glazes. Overall in many ways they remained fairly unchanged for a couple hundred years. These slight differences make dating accurately a bit difficult for certain types and forms. This is evidenced by numerous Freer-Sackler entrees in their collection describing these pieces as “Southern Song to Yuan” or “Jin or Yuan”, “Northern Song or Jin” etc. To further illustrate this difficulty, one example in the collection is dated Song Dynasty or “Modern”.
