A Chinese Export Porcelain Catalog Celebrating the 90th Anniversary at MARCHANTS in London

MARCHANTS, the venerable and renowned London dealer of Asian Art celebrated their 90th Anniversary this past May. To kick things off they held an exhibition of fine 18th C. Chinese export porcelain made for the west.  The show and sale began on May 7th, 2015 and ended that month of the 24th.

The 90th Anniversary Exhibition was comprised of 52 outstanding pieces from 19 dealers and collectors. Many of the pieces were well known with several previously published examples from over the years. Most notable were 24 pieces from the collection of Dr Hardouin, Nantes, France, as well as examples from the estate of Khalil Rizk.

The forward to the catalog below by Richard P. Marchant explains how the values of Chines Export wares, including porcelain, have depreciated following the entry into the Chinese art market by mainland Chinese collectors. These collectors are primarily only focused on "Chinese taste" objects resulting in a rapid rise in value  while demand for China Trade wares on the market fell . Resulting in a shortage of the former and a surplus of the later. Recently Chinese collectors have begun to show an interest in this somewhat ignored category of China's art history and are now starting to buy them as well.

MARCHANT opens a New Gallery for Chinese Export Porcelain

To deal with this change in demand, MARCHANT has opened a new gallery devoted to Chinese Export porcelain. Now being run by Natalie Marchant at 101 Kensington Church, London focusing on export wares.  The new gallery is a few steps down the block from the main gallery at 120 Kensington Church.  Ms.Marchant represents the 4th generation to enter the family business.
