The Catalog Marchant Exhibition of Chinese Ceramics May 2014

In May of 2014 an exhibition of Chinese ceramics was conducted at Marchant of 120 Kensington Church Street, London. The show and sale comprised fifty eight exceptional examples of Chinese ceramics dating from the Tang to Qing Dynasty. The objects represented were from 26 collections across the globe provenanced to what are nearly house-hold names in the world of Asian art.

The catalog, beautifully and profusely illustrated, with extensive text and bearing multiple photos of most objects is an essential reference for any collector or dealer.

Among the many gems is No. 48, an exceptional Imperial copper red glazed stem cup bearing a Qianlong (1736-1795) mark and of the period (of course). The evenness with which the red glaze was applied is just excellent. For collectors of the very earliest in Fencai enamels and who only want the absolute best was a smashingly attractive and large 89 cm tall baluster vase, No. 42.,  bearing six alternating floral and figural recessed panels surmounted by a Fool lion embellished lid. If I had to pick my favorite of the entire catalog I'd have to say it was no. 25, the Imperial Kangxi mark and period underglaze blue and red bowl depicting carp. the entire interior and exterior was decorated with waves, aquatic plants, crab, prawns and flowers. The base with a six character mark. Its nearly identical to one in the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection given as part of the Gulland bequest 80 years ago.
