Found this today. Peter likes horses, I think this one is pretty well painted. Unfortunately, I didn’t pay by weight for this one, had to fork out real money. But couldn’t pass it up. Looks like they are wading in a river or swamp. I like the pastels, not as jarring as some Imari... Its a pretty decent size too, 16”. Late 19th?

for me it looks much older than late 19th century, but I may be wrong. I don't know much about Japanese porcelain, but I think it is not Imari. I would call it a famille verte charger.

You read my mind, I was posting the same thought about Imari. Thanks. Is the term “famille verte” reserved for Chinese porcelain? I don’t actually know. But that would be a very good description, I agree.

Meiji and very nice Watership. Very nice. I did think at first it might be Chinese but the foot and rings makes me think Arita and if I was to make a bet that's where my money would be. How much did you say it was again?

Hi Sup, Thanks so much! The thought it might be Chinese crossed my mind for a moment too, but as you say, seems unlikely. Was marked 2500 baht, I haggled it down to 2300, so $72 usd. Trying to think back, it might be the most I ever spent on one piece of porcelain. ?

It is definitely Japanese, interesting scene and such a good size, too. I would agree 19th c Meiji. A nice buy for the money. ?

Thanks! I really like it. I almost left it there, it seemed so overpriced compared to what I usually spend. But I would have regretted it. Now that I have it home, I like it even more. Yes, I’m sure you are right, must be Japanese. But haven’t been able to find something comparable online yet.

Dear Todd,
Your charger is Japanese, as others have noted, and Meiji period, which Mark was the first to spot. I guess it's in good condition? And yes, it's probably best to talk about famille verte in relation only to Chinese ceramics, to avoid confusion!

Thanks for that information. I wasn’t sure of it was correct to refer to non-Chinese items in that way. Best to follow conventions, as you advise. Yes, its in very nice condition. Some light scuffing on the back, but that’s pretty standard for these.

Yer man is not too happy with the higher ranking or noble horseman,looking down his nose and yodeling his wife with his fancy free seat.
I like the way the wives lineage is to the roots of nature and the Husbands lineage is to his class and standing in society.
