18th c Qianlong Wall Pocket or Vase depicting a European woman riding an Elephant while breast feeding her baby.
Red hair and prominent noses, typically depiction of Europeans by Chinese .
A nice stand also.Originally I thought Zitan,now I'm not sure.
🙂 Very cool. I really like it. There are some very interesting exports with Europeans riding pigs. They are very unique
I like the baby with the red hair, same as the guy holding the Umbrella ! Who's the Daddy ?!
So the wall pocket is on a stand that has a back as well and that is how it attaches to the wall? That is interesting - no idea about wood types, though, sorry!
Dear Vic,
by the pictures, it is not convincing to me. Too much pristine and the faces are not really convincing. What mainly worry me is the perfect conditions of the red enamel on the faces, which is prone to wear off easily.
See my Qianlong bowl of this type, that I have sold in the past. The faces have completely disappeared.
But I must say that the enamels looks really right, that you have the vase in hands and that for sure you have experience on the ware of that period.
Giovanni
Almost too perfect to be true - red -haired woman , breastfeeding on a elephant !
Have you seen the base of this vase , and does it detach from the wooden stand? To me , this could be mid-19th , Tongzhi, from the way the figures are painted.
I think zitan wood darkens with age , becoming purply black , and is very dense. Although the pictures show the wood with different colours it looks like rosewood , or another similar hard wood, with a fairly open structure.
tam
Believe me it is a good and genuine piece.
The only restoration that it required was to a chip and hairline from the top left hand side, the enamels are untouched.
I agree the enamels and iron red are in very good condition. It was attached to the stand by glue and removed by the restorer.
Iron red is very durable, just look at Kangxi milk and blood items.
There were 2 of these shaped items with standard famille rose pattern,no figures if I remember rightly at Sothebys, unsold a number of years ago.
I even found one with similar characters to your bowl.
Vic,soon I believe to be removed ,sadly from Gotheborg,a site I love.
Dear Shine,
I personally would have no difficulty in accepting this wall pocket as being dating to the late eighteenth century.
Short Dong mentions having seen European-subject wares depicting people riding on pigs. I am not aware of any such, and would be interested to hear more about them. What I am aware of, however, is famille rose export wares belonging to the India Service pattern, in which a mahout may be shown riding on the back of an elephant. Could this be what you refer to, Short Dong?
Regards,
Alan
Doesn't Zitan wood sink? Or is that the case with any hard wood?
I also had an 18th century export bowl and those red faces had almost completely disappeared, but I imagine a bowl may be subjected to more frequent and different handling?

You are correct Alan. I was sure it was a pig because the figure is in western style. I was speaking off the top of my head but i was basing the observation on this milk jug, and milk jugs just remind me of breakfast and pigs seem more relevant.
Well it is strange that the Chinese imagine westerners riding elephants. Maybe they imagines boars in europe as having long snouts like we have big noses.
Is this what you had in mind
Nice piece. The wood however going by said posted picture's would not be zitan. It looks like hong mu wood.
If this was zitan wood it would have been a reddish black over time and would have a distinct grain.
And yes if zitan would sink along with many other hardwoods to name.
Mark
I agree with Giovanni and Tam. This should be a 19th C./ Tongzhi piece. The red color is not dark red, but more thin and yellowish red. And the enamels are typical late 19th C. in my eye.

The Vase is Qianlong.
The wood is a hardwood with very tight parralel (sic) grain. It sinks in water.
