I'm glad you won it. Just packing it actually. I really really like this plate but I am still coming to terms with being an antique dealer means I can't keep everything just because I like it. I think I am getting better at it, you would think I'd be better after nearly ten years but nope...

So yesterday I was informed that this dish is straits and Tongzhi period. I mentioned that this could not be the fact because the mark is stamped and the understanding is stamped marks are Guangxu. I was told this is a myth and was shown stamped marks on Straits porcelain in a book that is known to be the Bible for strait’s porcelain. So what is the truth?

That's interesting, when I posted it before I think the conclusion the forum came to was that the Tongzhi marked pieces that were stamped were in fact Guangxu. I had always kind of thought this as well, what book is it so I can add yet another pile of info to my knowledge stockpile?

@jbeer2121 it was a book from my friend I’ll get it from him but it’s also on Gotheborg for all straits pieces illustrated and they don’t just mix things in. When you showed the piece here did they mention it was straits?
No, just that it was Guangxu not Tongzhi. I will try to find the post and link it, but it was a while ago.
Its funny since on Gotheborg I came to the Guangxu conclusion, but never thought to check the Straits section.
I will have to do some reading up on it.

The plate is beautiful. It could have been made for the South East Asia market but is not Straits porcelain in the strict sense in my opinion (phoenixes and peonies on colored background). I too would be interested to learn about the book because I know only three books on the subject and have them all.

I find it hard to see it as Straits as well. It lacks the vibrancy as much as the typical pattern features. If it is, I would keep photocopies of the references to it as such in case you want to sell it.
I wonder if collectors of Straits Porcelain would be less interested in an a-typical piece? What I mean is, do they collect it for the traditional, very colourful, phoenix and flower patterns, or because it is nyonya ware?
My understanding is plates like mine are commissioned in large services like this straits set commissioned in 19th century for Khoo Bee.
