Most of yesterday I scanned Liveauctioneers.com and Auctionzip.com for Chinese and Japanese antiques. Sadly, I'm left wondering how anyone hoping to acquire genuine Chinese antiques can avoid getting scammed unless they really know what they're doing. I think I often say there are 100 fakes to every 1 genuine piece. Well, I think 1000 to 1 is more accurate. Wow....it is a bit depressing to think about, because even lower end pieces in the under $1,000 catagory are now heavily copied, and flood the auction houses.
I did find 2 possible treasures, but I'll hold off on saying more, and let you know how that works out for me....not sure if I'll win or not.
But, there is a ray of sunshine, and that bit of hope comes from Waddington's auction in Canada.

Let me put it out there, plain and simple. IF YOU WANT TO BUY SOME GENUINE PIECES WITHOUT EMPTYING YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, YOU SHOULD REGISTER AND BID ON WADDINGTON'S!!!
In fairness, there were two or three pieces that I was not entirely comfortable saying they were genuine, but they seemed artistically correct, so I could not rule them out as fakes.
However, overall, Waddington's estimates very reasonably, and the quality runs from entry to high intermediate level, perhaps even into the low exceptional group.
There is something for everyone in this sale!
I'm not sure why it doesn't get the attention that it deserves, but after seeing what is out there in the market, Waddington's should be on everyone's radar.
Waddingtons gets good stuff but according to Peter...be very careful.
I haven't bought anything from them. Their estimates are low and they often get good prices etc.
I only have my eye on two imperial plate's that have been overlooked. Not with Waddington btw.
Mark
@imperialfinegems That's an interesting response from Peter. What auction don't you need to be 'careful', outside of the major ones?
I have long understood that iGavel and Waddington's have been the target of buying of many of the top sellers on Ebay. These sellers have shown an ability to get 3-4 times what they spend from group lots sold by these two auction houses, then splitting up these lots into individual item lots sold on Ebay.
Mark - I'd be especially interested in your thoughts on some of the higher dollar jade pieces being sold at Waddington's. I'm not sure I'm game to buy jade at this time, but some of the lots look especially fine quality.
Regarding the furniture, it all looks of the period and of good quality, varying from entry level to low exceptional. The best piece being the base to a Ming/early Qing huanghuali mirror stand, estimated at 15,000-20,000 CAD. If you can hold on to this piece and track down the decorative back screen and mirror stand that goes with this base, I think you'll end up with a piece worth $100,000 or more.
As for the group lots...lots and lots of good quality 19th c. pieces that can broken up into individual Ebay lots. I don't see a fake porcelain piece in the entire sale.
If anyone who finds a fake porcelain in this sale, please post... it would make for good discussion.
I only quickly looked at the Jade's......lot 13 looks Ok.
Most of the other Jade's looked average...... but I only quickly looked Up to lot 250.
lot 205 looks like a Yongzheng garlic vase.
Lot 235 the three hat stands also look good.
I don't have access to Peter's auction reviews etc but I do recall asking someone and that's what they replied or close to it.... I really can't remember.
Others who have access could tell us the current status.
Mark
@imperialfinegems I think the washing of the elephant jade piece has a broken head that was reglued (I see old glue around the neck), but for the price, I think it is a very good buy, too!
I am using a small phone ATM so it's difficult etc.
One would need to ask for condition report etc.
How much did the huali item you posted sell for at Sotheby's?
Mark
@imperialfinegems It brought $10,000. Listed as 18th c… I think it could be older, but with some replacements.
According to Peter's auction report card, Waddinton's a "D" grade and "An old auction house with minimal dating of objects, vague descriptions etc...be very careful they sell a lot of fakes."
Just FYI - I am not commenting on quality of the auction.
Maybe everybody already knows this, but the photos are MUCH better resolution on Waddington's site.

@cocosvariety Thank you for posting Peter's rating.
I don't have access to Peter's auction reviews, so it is difficult for me to offer an opinion on how he determines an auction house's rating.
However, this sale looks very good. I will even go as far to say that if anyone can find a major descrepency, PLEASE POST!
I have no affiliation with Waddington's, never sold or bought through them, and I don't know any of their staff. But, I might register for this sale... a few pieces I would not mind picking up at the right price providing shipping, buyer's premium, and taxes permit.
And, at 75 cents US to every $1 CAD, that equates to a 25% discount.... I say, GAME ON!
@imperialfinegems Mark, please tell us more! Once the auction has ended, of course. Hope you win them.
Carol
@greeno107 What, if anything, did any of you buy? Please share. I liked several things, but either bid too low or did not have enough knowledge to raise my bid high enough.
Carol
I was hopelessly outgunned on the lot I was chasing...
https://www.waddingtons.ca/auction/asian-art-apr-06-2023/gallery/lot/235/
Apparently I am not the only one that thought that estimate looked like a deal.
