I've been looking through the Peabody Essex Museum quite a bit lately because of my new Derby plate and found some interesting things. The museum has an amazing virtual tour of every exhibit including the Yin Yu Tang exhibit, the Asian export exhibit, and the JapanOMania exhibit. Check it out!
According to the description, the Yin Yu Tang exhibit is part of a cultural exchange project with the local government in China, and is the relocation of a home built 200 years ago:

Also, there is an interesting lecture that is free for all to register and attend via zoom at 5:00 pm EST titled "The View from the Isle of France: Elias Hasket Derby Jr.'s East India Voyage." Needless to say, I'll be watching! I do recognize this may be inconvenient for our friends outside of the US, but perhaps a recording would be made available. I will inquire if anyone is interested. Her project, Damaged Commodities Afloat: Maritime Ship Management in the Early American Republic, 1783-1820, explores how American merchants who financed the China and East Indies trade from the 1780s to the 1810s coped with material loss at sea.

I know right? The plaque says it was originally installed in the Strathallen Castle. I would've loved to have seen a reproduction of that room... Small hongs at canton paintings can sell for thousands to tens of thousands. An entire room? Priceless. What a treasure. That inlaid chair is such an interesting mix of cultures, too! I really love this area of collecting.

I hope a museum scoops that up and creates an exhibit on the influence of Japan on the western world. Definitely an underappreciated area.
On the Strathallen wallpaper, it is interesting that it is dated by PEM to 1800. If so, I suspect the Hongs and flags must've been the first to have been painted in this wallpaper set, and that it started at least in the early part of 1799, then completed in late 1800... It is missing the flag of the United States, which was raised on October 30, 1799, on the birthday of former President Adams. See The Hongs of Canton, Western merchants in south China 1700-1900, Patrick Conner p. 55, n. 40 (2009) (citing a letter from Samuel Snow to Browns and Ives).
