Dear all,
Impulse purchases can some times prove to be with luck wise, but in my personal experience over time the opposite has proved to be true. Nether- the- less I still occasionally forget previous mistakes and take a chance. The reason I bought this Ink Stone was that I have an Imari plate with a carp and a turtle peeking out from under a lotus leaf almost identical to the decoration on the ink stone. The plate is right for last half of the 19thc. The seller of the stone claimed Chinese and 19thc and the price asked was not that high. So no great financial loss. Since making the purchase I have brought a set of flash cards that help me translate Chinese script, plus google translate has improved significantly. As far as I can work out the script on my stone. Reads Xianfeng 16years. The Xianfeng Emperor reign started in 1851 and ended 1861. So 16 years from 1851 would be 1866.So it seems the faker made a mistake with their dates. The rest of the script on the stone is very hard to read and translate but I think I can see a name Zhu Qishan I am not sure about that.
Not a great financial loss, but another dent in the ego.

Mark,
Good questions, The back with the calligraphy could well acid etched would explain why some strokes are to fat however the marks have very little depth it is only because of the stain you can see them clearly. I thought that they may of been stamped in ink then scratched over with a burin then stained. But you may well be right.
As far as the front is concerned there is a considerable amount of undercutting around the small carp and ducks at the top giving nice shadow and a feeling of depth. There are waves under the top fish and ducks. Even the little turtle is slightly under cut. But it could well of been roughed out by a drill and then hand finished. The front is well done and stained to look like box wood. However as we know labor costs are very low in China so to spend some time finishing something wold not be not much of a problem. If it was not for the problem with the dates in the inscription I would have thought it 0.k. for late 19thc. However having discovered the problem with the dates you start to look at other aspects so you are right to raise the issue's of the carving. It is carved from Shoushan ink stone which as you probably know is very soft so it would not take long to refinish.
